C&C - Toonami Talkback [4/1]

While any acquisitions are possible (there have certainly been surprises in the past), my guess is that the best bet would be Funimation shows, considering their seemingly enthusiastic participation in Toonami on April 1st.

Perhaps we could finally seen East of Eden or Soul Eater on television, or Summer Wars if they are looking for movies.

It is too bad the license for Godannar seems to have lapsed (or has it?). That would have been fun.

It's almost a waste for Summer Wars to be on AS Toonami, though, because there's zero content in it that couldn't air on regular Cartoon Network. No reason they couldn't show it after a Level Up marathon (since it's similar in being video game-based battles, only fully animated and much, much, much better). I get it if Naruto and One Piece and such end up on AS Toonami rather than regular CN, because of editing being a hassle and the teenage audience being sort of stuck inbetween CN and AS, but if all non-toyetic anime, even completely kid-friendly stuff, is off-limits for CN, that just kind of makes me sad.

May go off on a bit of a tangent, but why did Adult Swim in the first place not mind picking up Kekkaishi, Durarara, and Moribito again? As much as I want to say I get the reason behind it, I really don't get the pattern. The most I can think of is that Viz provided Inuyasha to Adult Swim which still airs at 5:30 am I think, so they didn't mind paying money to broadcast Kekkaishi (is that how it usually works? That the network pays the licensor to air a show if they accept it?) Durarara while I like it, came a bit out of left field to me. And Moribito I don't get that much really unless becuase it was a Production I.G show.

Frankly it's just outright hard to figure out for me what it would take for Adult Swim to want to add whatever anime show they're offered to their channel these days.

I'm not sure about Kekkaishi or Durarara (some people speculated that Kekkaishi was picked up as part of a package deal with Inuyasha Final Act, but that clearly wasn't the case), but I can answer this.

There was a woman at Cartoon Network several years ago (and I feel bad that I can't remember her name) who had been working at the channel for a very long time. In about 2007, she was put in charge of acquisitions for the network. Her first act? She acquired Moribito to air on Toonami, in an effort to give the block some much-needed new blood (this was after TOM 4 was introduced, and ratings were gradually dropping).

Unfortunately, about two weeks after she was given the position, she unexpectedly passed away, leaving Moribito as her only contribution within that brief time. The next person who was put in charge of acquisitions decided to lessen focus on Toonami, so Moribito was shoved at Adult Swim with the mentality of "we paid for it, we don't want it, you do something about it".

It was really a sad situation overall.

:^: Her name was Jennifer Davidson, and yes, TZ interviewed her, ironically shortly before she passed.

I think Fist of the North Star late at night could be a huge smash. It's one of those shows that would get a lot of word of mouth promotion.

Didn't know that about Summer Wars content. Hopefully it makes its way to Cartoon Network at some point. I haven't seen it myself, I've just heard it is good.

That would be great but they probably can't get away with the violence of Fist of the North Star.

When is [as] upfront... Cause theell prob announce something there about toomami

They don't usually announce stuff at the upfront based on recent history and I still have no idea when that upfront will be but probably some time in May.

Sketch, I see no reason at this point why violence should have to be edited for the most part in shows on adult swim, even on an adult swim toonami and/or anime. They can air TV-MA stuff and frankly Metalocalypse and Superjail should be able to pave the way for anything. I really don't see the logic in violence holding back a show anymore. That's not to say that people in charge still don't understand that.

They wont play Elfen Lied on Adult Swim. Not involving nudity but Fist of the North Star is suuuuper violent. And they don't touch super violent anime. The closest they've come that level is Trinity Blood and Blood+ besides some episodes of Bleach and Brotherhood and maybe Ghost in the Shell.

It doesn't make a lot of sense but it's how it is. Seemingly they would not air Afro Samurai or maybe they were outbid I forget honestly.

Fist of the North Star just might be a bit too much violence despite what Superjail, Metalocalypse and Robot Chicken show. That's the impression I get from Adult Swim.

More power to them if they have the stones to air it but... how is that dub anyway?

I believe Afro Samurai was like co-produced by Spike TV or something. That at least SEEMS right in my head. I say that they are more likely not to air FotNS because of its age more than its violence, honestly. At least as far as the original FotNS is concerned. I feel like the original Hellsing wouldn't be too much for today's Adult Swim with the exception of maybe some language censors. That's not to say that they will or should look into airing that at this point.

First of all, regarding the response to Moribito being on Adult Swim, I saw both the interview and the article of Jennifer Davidson's passing and.... I can't believe I didn't even know about that until now. It sounds so sad and messed up and not just because of the result of the treatment that Moribito got later on. But that she was only so young and her illness came out fo nowhere... I feel bad for never having known about this. It's such a shame. But, I don't want to dwell too much on that though. So with that being said...

Fist of the North Star just might be a bit too much violence despite what Superjail, Metalocalypse and Robot Chicken show. That's the impression I get from Adult Swim.
Well not only that, but Fist of the North Star is ridiculously old. I was just listening to an episode of the AnnCast titled "Overcooked" which the guest of that episode was Justin Cook who I believe is a producer for Funimation dubs which from what I can understand involves overseeing how to approach a dub for a show, who to hire as line producers for dubs in which the line producers seem to decide what voice director and script writers to pick, consulting with people running TV networks they offer a show to, etc.. Among the things he talked about in the episode, he also talked about the Shin Chan dub being on Adult Swim at one point and the SGT. Frog dub which did not end up being on TV at all. Regarding Shin Chan, he said the struggle for Shin Chan was how it both came with some not-so-easy translatable gags and puns and I think pop cultural references from the early-mid 90s. So it was a dated show with dated pop humor that according to Justin Cook, was handled by different companies in the past 15 years before, flopped each time before they acquired it and when they acquired it, the audience that wanted a simple, uncut, closely-adapted script for the show wasn't big enough to support a really long-running show. So they came up with a really punched up script that departed from much of the story as a business strategy and seemed to work enough to get it on Adult Swim of all places.

With SGT. Frog, that show was also old (not as old as Shin Chan since it premiered in 2004 in Japan, but still), it seemed to have been pitched and handled several different times before, and it was hard to see if the fanbase was big enough to help provide good ratings for the show on a network. Justin and his writing team for the show then thought of punching up the dub, but not as much as with Shin Chan. Now what does this have to do with Fist of the North Star? Like I said, it's really old. Older than even Shin Chan. It might've possibly even been pitched to a network at some point before and the fanbase is probably not at all big for any of the DVD releases. I would assume that the majority of fans of that show stem from the same crowd that listens to the Anime World Order Podcast as well as Daryl Surat himself who have either got DVD/laser disc collections or something of that show or have downloaded it, watched it in Japanese and are satisfied with that and wouldn't care to watch it on Adult Swim.

So with all of that being mentioned, I think the problem with Fist of the North Star is far more than just a matter of it being overly violent. And having listened to that episode of the ANNCast earlier today, it kind of makes me realize how few shows can be accepted on Adult Swim, even shows like Darker than Black and Eden of the East may not be as promising if Funimation isn't sure whether those shows can offer decent ratings for Adult Swim as well as decent DVD sales. I mean for an anime show to be pitched successfully to a network, it would have to be new or feel new to the network, promise at least decent ratings which means anime fans would need to watch a show dubbed and there are unfortunately an overwhelmingly large and vocal amount of sub-only fans. Not to mention the content would either have to fairly well fit the nature of a channel I think or the show itself or the theme of a show would need to be based on something that has promised good ratings before. And if that last requirement is true, it may explain why not just FMA Brotherhood ended up on Adult Swim, but also Kekkaishi since it's from Viz Media who also offered Inuyasha which both shows have a traditional Japanese, supernatural element to them. And Inuyasha seemed to have done good enough on Adult Swim to still be hanging on to the channel by a thread and have gotten seasonal promos and a movie marathon night.

I know this is about what would be a good fit for an Adult Swim Toonami programming block, but it seems to be that the real problem is figuring out what show could meet requirements for what Adult Swim wants. That seems to make a very thin margin for what anime shows can really work and if I had to think about it, something like Tiger and Bunny could work if Viz Media even cares to make that push. They definitely care to have a dub for it and release, but I'm not sure about TV exposure. I want to say Last Exile: Fam of the Silver Wing if Funimation plans to dub it and release it on DVD/Blu-ray since the first series was technically on G4TechTV at the time Anime Unleashed was still around. But the audience for that show as it aired from Japan and was simulcasted by Funimation didn't like it as much as the original series. I don't know if the Lupin the 3rd TV series that was on Adult Swim years back had good ratings. But if it did, than maybe The Woman Called Fujiko Mine could work if Funimation dubs it. Then again, if it did end up on Adult Swim, it might get censored somehow and anime fans left and right could for all I know rant non-stop no matter how the censorship could be played out and then a bunch of people might not watch it.

Would elfen lied be a good pick for toonami?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

A: The rights (owned by a semi-defunct company) are soon to expire.

B: Its Elfen Lied.... oh god............... >_<

C: They actually DID considering airing it in 2006. The censors board only made it through five minutes of the first episode before considering the cyanide tablets.

I've watched the first episode of Elfen Lied on Netflix, and personally, I can't imagine it on TV at all, ever. At least, it will never air on basic cable.

For anyone still thinking about Elfen Lied or other extremely violent shows on Adult Swim, it's not gonna happen. For reference, here's a post on the Adult Swim Boards from Kim Manning back in 2006 (around the time Eureka Seven premiered), where she talks about action acquisitions. I'm pretty confident that similar standards apply today, and would likely apply to a Toonami block on Adult Swim.

In a nutshell, Manning was a big fan of Elfen Lied, but it along with Gantz weren't picked up because of all the edits that would have been required by Standards ("cut to shreds" as she put it), Gankutsuou was a personal favorite of hers but was too slow paced for the block, and IFC outbid them for Samurai 7.

Some things she says in later posts in the thread are interesting as well, such as acknowledging the differing violence standards between comedy shows and action shows.

They could possibly get away with running Higurashi now, but Elfen Lied... no way in heck.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
