The Man in Black
I have 5 of broats
I feel the need to post this:
The one ray of hope is that TOONAMI classic night did air DBZ uncut & I don't believe that was possible without Toei's consent.
Andrew T. Hingson said:They aired the old edited for Y7-FV Toonami tape of DBZ that night just as they did with Outlaw Star and Blue Sub No. 6. FUNi sent new tapes for Trigun and Yu Yu Hakusho but they spared us the washed-out wide screen DVD version of DBZ that can be seen on Hulu and ran the old Toonami tapes scaled up. It's been a while so maybe you don't recall that once they reached the Freeza saga they were keeping in static blood on the edited version aired on Toonami. The fact that they rated that previous Y7-FV episode as TV-PG speaks to how CN/AS standards have changed to the point that their more violent Y7-FV shows would likely get rated TV-PG today.
Toonami played two versions of Gundam Wing. I didn't pay enough attention on April 1st to determine if they ran the PG or Y7 version of Gundam Wing that night but maybe someone else knows which version was played.
I don't think the decision to air the Y7-FV cut of DBZ that night had much if anything to do with Toei's preferences. They may not have been consulted at all about the 1 time showing on April 1st. Perhaps their seal of approval was not necessary to run tapes they already approved before. I get the impression that Toei's not quite as hands-on with the original DBZ as they are with One Piece but Kai is another story. I can only speculate but I feel like if Toei's approval was necessary to run DBZ that night then they wouldn't have been able to make the deals for that night in the short time it took to do so based on how slow Toei's processes tends to be despite the modern age we live in.
Perhaps if DBZ did have another run on Toonami, it would likely be Uncut this time around. If they were willing to get new Uncut masters for Naruto, why not their biggest show ever?

They played the PG Midnight Run version of Gundam Wing. I know, because blood was seeping from Heero after he blew up his Gundam.
Andrew T. Hingson said:Thanks for clearing that up guys. I thought they might have used the PG version. It's nice to know they still have those tapes.
I'm sure FUNimation would be more than willing to send Adult Swim uncut tapes of DBZ but do we really want that shoddy wide screen remaster on TV much less scaled up to HD? Bleh... It'd be much preferable to get the Dragon Box footage but I suppose that's not likely to happen and even if it did anyone watching it in HD would get stretch-o-vision.
No it doesn't. Try looking at the current lineup & ask yourself what does it have a lot in common with? Nothing! The only show that even mentions the word "pirates" is GXP & unless you are targeting One Piece near 3a that serves no purpose. One Piece would work much better with the shows on Toonami though, because it actually does has a lot in common with the shows on there.
DBZ's nostalgia value is as legendary as TOONAMI itself & It's ratings are proven from last April.

If Nick were to get One Piece how do you think they would promote it? Patchy the Pirate. It's easy to take one of the most well-known characters of the #1 animated show in the nation & use him to promote One Piece. No one cares what a fan-boy thinks about a show because their loyalty borders on being insane. What matters most is what the casual/avg fan thinks. The casual fan knows who Patchy the Pirate is & that "pirate" connection is an obvious bond for Nick to make use in promoting One Piece.
And besides, according to the toonami tumblr, [as] can't even licence DBZ as of right now, since the licence belongs to nicktoons
No it's not but the fact you believe that explains a lot. Shounen = young males & in terms of marketing it has always meant tween age boys (9-14) as the prime target & teens who still buy manga/toys/games (12-17) as the much smaller 2ndry target. Just like in the US the m9-14 demog is driven by comics/toys/games. The main cultural divide is that Japan seems to draw a line in the sand after age 17. That's mainly because fewer males go on to college there than in the states. Campus life is not as abundant there as the US. It's the campus life which has led to a strong 12-24 demog in the states that also includes comics/toys/games. You won't find sponsors in the US looking for strictly 12-17 like you will in Japan. Those sponsors target 12-24 instead. But that is the smaller 2ndry market for shounen in general. The larger market is m9-14.Shounen translated means "teen boy" if you shouldn't know.
