I feel the need to post this:

I will accept Larry as Franky and that's it.

The one ray of hope is that TOONAMI classic night did air DBZ uncut & I don't believe that was possible without Toei's consent.

They aired the old edited for Y7-FV Toonami tape of DBZ that night just as they did with Outlaw Star and Blue Sub No. 6. FUNi sent new tapes for Trigun and Yu Yu Hakusho but they spared us the washed-out wide screen DVD version of DBZ that can be seen on Hulu and ran the old Toonami tapes scaled up. It's been a while so maybe you don't recall that once they reached the Freeza saga they were keeping in static blood on the edited version aired on Toonami. The fact that they rated that previous Y7-FV episode as TV-PG speaks to how CN/AS standards have changed to the point that their more violent Y7-FV shows would likely get rated TV-PG today.

Toonami played two versions of Gundam Wing. I didn't pay enough attention on April 1st to determine if they ran the PG or Y7 version of Gundam Wing that night but maybe someone else knows which version was played.

I don't think the decision to air the Y7-FV cut of DBZ that night had much if anything to do with Toei's preferences. They may not have been consulted at all about the 1 time showing on April 1st. Perhaps their seal of approval was not necessary to run tapes they already approved before. I get the impression that Toei's not quite as hands-on with the original DBZ as they are with One Piece but Kai is another story. I can only speculate but I feel like if Toei's approval was necessary to run DBZ that night then they wouldn't have been able to make the deals for that night in the short time it took to do so based on how slow Toei's processes tends to be despite the modern age we live in.

Yeah, I am fairly sure FUNimation has always handled the airing rights for DBZ in the US, and not Toei. Considering FUNimation got DBZ back in the late 90s, it makes sense. I don't think Toei handled US TV rights until years later, particularly Sailor Moon S and Super S.

Perhaps if DBZ did have another run on Toonami, it would likely be Uncut this time around. If they were willing to get new Uncut masters for Naruto, why not their biggest show ever?

I think that would most likely happen. They would need a way to help attract more attention to DBZ airing on Toonami again and having it uncut like Naruto would do the trick, even though they could probably air the edited version just fine and still get solid ratings with DBZ airing on the block.

They played the PG Midnight Run version of Gundam Wing. I know, because blood was seeping from Heero after he blew up his Gundam.

Plus I distinctly remember there being a "damn" somewhere in the dialogue.

Thanks for clearing that up guys. I thought they might have used the PG version. It's nice to know they still have those tapes.

I'm sure FUNimation would be more than willing to send Adult Swim uncut tapes of DBZ but do we really want that shoddy wide screen remaster on TV much less scaled up to HD? Bleh... It'd be much preferable to get the Dragon Box footage but I suppose that's not likely to happen and even if it did anyone watching it in HD would get stretch-o-vision.

Actually, if a 4:3 master is in HD, Turner leaves the aspect ratio alone. YYH wasn't stretch-o-vision when it aired in HD on April Fools, since they were using the Blu Ray master. Technically YYH's HD master is 16:9, but is pillarboxed.

One Piece would work much better with the shows on Toonami though, because it actually does has a lot in common with the shows on there.
No it doesn't. Try looking at the current lineup & ask yourself what does it have a lot in common with? Nothing! The only show that even mentions the word "pirates" is GXP & unless you are targeting One Piece near 3a that serves no purpose.

If Nick were to get One Piece how do you think they would promote it? Patchy the Pirate. It's easy to take one of the most well-known characters of the #1 animated show in the nation & use him to promote One Piece. No one cares what a fan-boy thinks about a show because their loyalty borders on being insane. What matters most is what the casual/avg fan thinks. The casual fan knows who Patchy the Pirate is & that "pirate" connection is an obvious bond for Nick to make use in promoting One Piece.

DBZ uncut makes a LOT more sense for TOONAMI. DBZ's nostalgia value is as legendary as TOONAMI itself & It's ratings are proven from last April. It brings another block of viewers to TOONAMI that might think Bleach & Naruto are lame in comparison. That provides the best possible lead for the rest of the block. Toei will probably encourage that deal because a 12-24 demog is the prime target for DBZ uncut.

I don't think stretch-o-vision is a big deal with DBZ uncut because it's not one size fits all. It will be a custom fit much the same as Bebop & Inuyasha are. DeMarco won't air a shoddy version of a show with this kind of stature. Fans of uncut are as much interested in every word as they are the image.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that its ratings are proven. Yeah, I believe that it would get good ratings, but you gotta keep in mind that the April Fools airing was, at the time, thought to be a one time thing, so the ratings are probably gonna be a little higher than they would be in actuality. Plus, DBZ is really overexposed. For all we know, the ratings could be good for the first few weeks and then, once nostalgic value wears off, take a nosedive. And besides, according to the toonami tumblr, [as] can't even licence DBZ as of right now, since the licence belongs to nicktoons

You sure are giving my patience a run for its money my friend! Seriously look, having a pirate in the show is not what makes shows similar. Using Patchy wouldn't be a bad way to promote One Piece if it was on Nick, but it fits a lot better with Naruto, Bleach and other action shows. All three are action adventures, with characters having super powers. They all have that "fight for your comrades" plot. Naruto and Luffy are quite similar when you look at it. Both are goofy main characters, but when it comes down to it, they're both really determined to reach their goals and values friendship higher than anything. Spongebob is a slapstick comedy, and I honestly can't believe someone thinks that One Piece is more similar to Spongebob than Naruto and Bleach. You might know this, but the manga of One Piece is from the same magazine as Bleach and Naruto; Shounen Jump. That's because they're similar and have a similar audience. Together, the three are labeled as "The Big Three" because of their popularity. They would probably use that label to promote it, should they get it. Really, nothing would got better with One Piece than those two. Although, it has a good share of older viewers, the target audience of Spongebob is still kids. One Piece is aimed at teen boys, just like Naruto and Bleach. Shounen translated means "teen boy" if you shouldn't know. So go ahead and call me insane again, but I'm sure that a very high majority agrees that One Piece is far more connected with Naruto and Bleach than Spongebob. Oh, and please don't call me fan-boy Mr. "RapidInuyashafan" >_>

While DBZ uncut would most likely bring in some good ratings, I would much rather see them airing new shows. Even if it was possible to get DBZ on the block, it's overexposed as it is and I'd prefer to see them giving other shows that aren't as famous some exposure. Plus, I wouldn't like the idea of another SJ title joining the block until they got the 11PM hour for the block and even then, it might be too much to have a lot of SJ titles on the block, even with their popularity in mind.

Eh... we had DBZ uncut on Toonami back in 2005. Its ratings took a dive because of all the boring filler in the early episodes, so they went back to the edited version because the spliced episodes moved faster.

Uncut DBZ I don't see working, especially at one episode per week. Uncut Kai maybe, but the rights are tied up.

If they ran uncut DBZ they could one-up Nicktoons with the Buu saga until the Kai version is available but playing DBZ from episode 1 at the pace of one episode a week is downright painful. Much more so than Naruto which has better pacing at least until Shippuden.

However there's little doubt in my mind that DBZ wouldn't get at least 1 million viewers every week. An uncut run of Kai would be much preferable to some Dragon Ball fans but nostalgics would be expecting Falcouner music and the old dub performances.

I'd watch DBZ again but I'd rather they not open that can of worms. They played that show to death and back. I'd much rather see Toonami tread more new ground than rely even more on nostalgia.

I still do believe DBZ will be back. Honestly, Naruto's proving that "classics" will pull in ratings. It's proving that uncut runs, classics and long shonen can pull in ratings. DBZ could do that too, however, unless Funi creates better masters, we would get the Singles footage that was ran on 4/1. And I don't think the Saiyan Saga would be played, either versions. Ocean Dub version just wouldn't fit on Adult Swim Toonami and would only be aired for pacing convience, and the uncut versions...well that's a pacing inconvience.

Wait --- they can't get DBZ cause Nicktoons has DBZK? I think I found the post, but sometimes I'm not sure if they mean Kai in any posts without listing it.

They are referring to Kai. Someone even asked if that was what they were referring to and they said yes.

Shounen translated means "teen boy" if you shouldn't know.
No it's not but the fact you believe that explains a lot. Shounen = young males & in terms of marketing it has always meant tween age boys (9-14) as the prime target & teens who still buy manga/toys/games (12-17) as the much smaller 2ndry target. Just like in the US the m9-14 demog is driven by comics/toys/games. The main cultural divide is that Japan seems to draw a line in the sand after age 17. That's mainly because fewer males go on to college there than in the states. Campus life is not as abundant there as the US. It's the campus life which has led to a strong 12-24 demog in the states that also includes comics/toys/games. You won't find sponsors in the US looking for strictly 12-17 like you will in Japan. Those sponsors target 12-24 instead. But that is the smaller 2ndry market for shounen in general. The larger market is m9-14.

A big part of the reason why Naruto draws over 1m on TOONAMI & Shippuden ended drawing less than 400k on DXD is the exposure to these networks on college campuses. CN/[as]/TOONAMI have a much bigger presence there than even Disney. DXD is just a residual presence amongst those who actually watch Disney on campus. In terms of Naruto & Bleach kids on campus today grew up watching the show in middle school & high school when it first aired on [as]. They grew up watching DBZ at an even younger age, so there is considerable nostalgic value with these three shows especially DBZ.

The same can not be said about One Piece. The nostalgia fans have over One Piece does not apply to the english dubs. There is no nostalgic value then in seeing One Piece dubs amongst the college fan base. Since the dubs have always been questionable in value to the subs anyways there isn't much reason to believe that many students on campus having an interest in OP now, are going to have a similar interest in the dubs.
