Digimon Adventure Gets a High School Sequel

I gotta be honest, I've been a Digimon fan ever since I was five when it replaced that Howie Mandell cartoon on Fox Kids, I loved.

But I am really not excited for this series at all I really don't care for the whole idea of bringing back original characters because they've had there fair share of character development/plots last time the tried doing a continuation of Adventure it fell flat on its face with massive plot holes. Honestly what's left to do with these characters? I really do not care at all for the slice of life genre and the more news I hear about the more I am annoyed by fans gushing over how awesome characters are without even caring what the plot is!

There is no way I'll be watching this when it comes out unless there's some kind of interesting hook.

Regarding Adventure 02, I think that the main reason for all of its problems was because there were a lot of writers involved and they just threw out all of their ideas, instead of choosing a few to develop. I doubt that they'll put too many writers on the staff for this series. As for the characters, while they all got pretty satisfying amount of development in Adventure, they could still do something more with them. Maybe they can show how becoming older and having to deal with high school life affects their relationship with their Digimon partners or with their families. The primary reason why they brought them back is for nostalgia though. I don't think that Xros Wars did all that well in regards to the toy sales, so they probably figured that bringing back familiar characters would give the show more attention, especially when the main hook for Young Hunters was the previous protagonists returning, even though that was just for a glorified cameo.

Still, I think it's a bit too early to write off the show completely. Like you said, they haven't even given any details about the plot yet. All they've been doing is focusing on the characters being older, which is a decent enough hook to grab some attention at least. The main reason my interest in the show was dropping for awhile was because they just kept teasing us without giving anything concrete to go by. With character designs and a title, I have a bit more interest in the show again.

Colleagues,

maybe things will look different when its actually animated but the cast look like their from an entirely different anime in that pic.

That tends to be what happens when the character designer is different and it is intentionally chosen to give the series its own look and feel.

From the high-definition broadcast. Yes, it does look horrible.

So is Renamon coming back?

That is Digimon Tamers you think of.

Well it's nice to know Toei is screwing over HD re-releases of older shows in their own country as well.

It's digital 480p, so it's not exactly going to look great anyway, but blurring the lines and completely smudging and oversaturating the colors sure as heck will not help.

Oversaturating the colors? The colors actually seem less bright to me... That is unless the fansubs oversaturated them even further.

But yes. That upscale does look rather abysmal.

Takeru's sleeves stuck out to me, although maybe that's just because of how blatantly they're blurred and lack texture, rather then simply the color.

But... but... why?!

The series was digitally colored and produced! There's absolutely no restoration work to be done! Just use the digital files and you're finished! It looks like they actually used DVNR on it. Is that really just a side effect of a simple upscale?

I've already pre-ordered an import of the blu-ray set. Digimon is the only series I would do this for. If my (hundreds of) dollars go towards... that, I'll be very sad.

EDIT: I found my answer. The masters for the show are SD composite, so I had unrealistic expectations for thinking it'd be much better. Still, though. Okay, with my expectations adjusted, I'm still excited for the blu-ray. I just hope that the movie blu-ray box (which I also ordered) looks much better.

I'd cancel that order if I were you. Toei Animation hasn't put out a proper remaster in years, it's best to wait until some other poor schmuck buys it and reveals all of the details.

I probably would cancel it if Digimon Adventure on blu-ray wasn't something that I had already been setting aside money towards for a long time. I'll admit I was a little fired up when I made that previous post of mine, but honestly, this is only a tad worse than I expected. I already did a lot of research before I committed to this. I knew about Toei and Q-Tec's horrendous track record. I knew the risks. Besides, I'm buying it anyway for various other reasons (the extras, the bonus books, the new CD drama, etc.). Still not worth the crazy retail price, but nothing from Japan ever is.

So I'll probably be that poor schmuck. :p But I'm okay with that. Like I said, I'd only ever do this for Digimon. This is a one-time thing.

As a side note, that movie boxset (which should look much, much better) has just been delivered to my house. And of course, I'm stuck at work. This day shall go by veeeeery slowly.

It is beginning to look like Digimon Adventure tri will not be premiering in the spring. Dragon Ball Kai is unlikely to end in March and there are no other regular Toei Animation slots available. I was assuming that it would take over the 9AM Sunday slot on Fuji TV, but with Dragon Ball Kai still a good twenty-four Dragon Ball Z episodes away from ending there isn't any chance it will end in just three episodes. Dragon Ball Z: Fukkatsu no F comes on 18 April, so it makes sense to keep Dragon Ball Kai running both to promote the movie and have one less slot that needs to be filled by a new series. Hopefully this will mean Digimon Adventure tri will have more time to get ahead of schedule, but in all likelihood staff might simply be shifted toward working on other series.

Saint Seiya: Soul of Gold is still on schedule for spring, so we'll have to see where the heck it airs, too.

Yeah, if we don't hear anything about a release date within, like, the next week, I'd assume Adventure tri is bumped back to July. That's when Dragon Ball Kai will end by my calculations, freeing up that slot. Sailor Moon Crystal will also end at that time, and Majin Bone and possibly Disk Wars will end in the spring, freeing up some of Toei's overworked staff for projects like Adventure tri and the new Saint Seiya.

Hmm...Dragon Ball Kai is getting a fifth Ending, so Digimon Adventure tri definitely isn't taking its slot for the spring cour.

Theme vocalists Wada Kouji and Miyazaki Ayumi are returning. Yamada Kinoko will voice Palmon, but otherwise all of the original voice actors for the Digimon partners are being brought back this series.

"Yamada Kinoko" is just a stage name that Shihomi Mizowaki uses, so Palmon has her original voice actor back as well.

That is most fortunate!

Dang, I can't think of anything else to say, other than "we still don't know when this thing is airing or when."

This is much better than the first poster. I'm feeling pretty good about this.

Extremely happy that the Partner Digimon voice actors will be reprising their roles. But man, they're really holding off on the humans. It's just making me more and more worried that Taichi will be recast. Toshiko Fujita was the only one who didn't reprise her role for the new audio drama on the Digimon Adventure blu-ray box. That worries me very much.

Speaking of that blu-ray box, mine finally arrived in the mail yesterday. The fears that I expressed at the top of this page were unfounded. The episodes look great. Not perfect, but still great. So glad I bought it. It's so surreal to finally have this show in its original Japanese!

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
