C&C - Toonami Talkback [4/1]

I would like to see Hamtaro and maybe Zatch Bell! If they can. But Zatch Bell! is my major hope.. :(

I think Toonami right now needs 3 kinds of shows in its schedule:

- mainstream (brand new/semi-new shows the majority of viewers will be familiar with)
- classic (older shows that are well known and recognizable to the older viewers, 70's-early 00's)
- obscure (shows that aren't that popular, but have their qualities and could become potential hits)

+ special events (marathons and movies)

As for music and bumpers... keep the style, re-use some of the stuff, produce new stuff, go 16:9 or HD and most importantly -> Steve Blum

And one more thing... please no Naruto/Shippuden. It's not worth the risk.

That's absolutely not the case.

Proof?

I think there is the potential for AS to throw just enough money at certain projects to get the rights to them before they air in Japan and do a simulcast (no more than what a season of what their cheaper originals cost.) There are certainly some studio/director pairings that would be great bets, and this removes that worry about the show being old news by the time it hit TV. It would be a good move for a Toonami [as] block...

I think that's overall a great idea --- the problem is, it seems like TPTB have been very unwilling to spend money ASA for a long time now. Acquisitions have been beyond slow.

If they were to work out deals for simulcasts or co-pros, those would have to be granted better slots than midnight I would think. Depends on the level of success expected I suppose.

They should stick to shorter series for the most part because one night a week makes long series a bit of a chore to watch.

Honestly, in all of this, I think the first and foremost thing we're going to see is Toonami take over ASA. If we're very, very, very lucky, we might see them run older series IN ADDITION to that. Things like Blue Sub #6, Kikaider, Astro Boy (2004), Blue Gender, Witch Hunter Robin might do REALLY REALLY REALLY well in a once a week premier status. I think they failed on Adult Swim in the past because they were played during weekdays and frankly moved FAR TOO FAST for fans to keep up with. Obviously fans who never saw Blue Sub #6 went "WHAT IS THIS" and wanted more. To me that sounds like a good plan to take us through the summer, but I think to capture the heart and soul of the block, they are going to *HAVE* to start with some Gundam Wing, Tenchi and Outlaw Star and MAYBE --- JUST MAYBE some token DBZ. DBZ might not be horrible since Nick is officially onto DBGT. Heck, CN could be really mean and start off with the Buu Saga since Nick didn't play it!

The bottom line which (I admit I drifted away from), I think what we're gonna get initially is Toonami replacing ASA with some token old-school toonami action that Cartoon Network can acquire cheaply or for next to nothing. If it does well from THERE, I suspect there's a real chance we could see more, soon.

All and all though, the length of series is what I keep coming back to saying triming series like Bleach and Naurto Ship might be a brilliant idea for Toonami, especially if they are in once a week premiers.

Two reasons stand out to me:

#1.) Compared "Trimmed" (cutting out filler) to full length episodes could be a primary point in selling DVDs.

#2.) Cycling - Bleach is getting old being at the 12A time slot for ---- HOW MANY YEARS? Yes, it took a hiatus once, but there should actually be, IMHO, more times for us to feel like Bleach should leave the block for a while. How's the old saying go --- "Absence makes the heart go fonder"

Working with 6 hours makes a lot of opportunity for surprises but if more American series than The Clone Wars or maybe ThunderCats reruns sneak onto the line-up I would be very surprised. But I would welcome any American action series with adult appeal and Turner has a decent amount just laying around picking up dust.

Depending on the start times, I think Clone Wars and Thundercats would be really great to see on Toonami. Lets face it, a lot of us were kind of like "WTF" when Clone Wars actually went to CN. George Lucas *WAS* looking for a more mature audience when he was looking for potential places to run the series and its no secret that the lack of Toonami did make George Lucas back peddle a bit on weather or not the series SHOULD go to Cartoon Network. More over, its no secret Cartoon Network DID jump through some hoops to try to build an atmosphere for that series. Heck, I'd even go so far to say that George Lucas HELPED (in some small part) this whole thing seem more plausible / possible.

I would like to see Hamtaro and maybe Zatch Bell! If they can. But Zatch Bell! is my major hope.. :(

I absolutely disagree. I DID like Zatch Bell, but I also felt like it didn't have a place on Toonami. Toonami tried too hard to make the first part of Toonami more "kid friendly" and the later part of the block feel too "adult friendly".

That being said, I think it would be fun to see Cartoon Network build a "companion block" again that featured Pokemon, possibly the new Digimon, Zatch Bell etc, but I don't think that's in the cards right now. The only place I could see that working is either a Saturday afternoon block, a new Sunday morning block or something in that thread. Historically those blocks don't do well because thats the time during the weekend people are out and about, especially during the summer.

Eh... Bleach is in premieres man. It would tick off the entire dub fan base if Adult Swim put in a break when they want to see the current canon story concluded (which means getting through the current filler arc and then the canon material after it). I would not recommend giving it a break until then. I would highly recommend doubling up Bleach. Also it is by far their highest rated anime and taking it off even with more anime that is expected to do well coming in is quite frankly a very bad idea. I wouldn't even recommend doing that for DBZ or InuYasha: The Final Act. There's no reason to take it off when it's only airing once a week much like in Japan.

It's a difficult process just trim filler from Bleach, One Piece and Naruto Shippuden in particular because they end up incorporating it into the rest of the show. Honest truth man, not that many dub fans mind filler as you might think. If they wanted the story that much faster they'd just read the manga. Personally I plain don't like the idea of doing that but more importantly it would take time and money to do it and unless they got the distributors themselves to do it that's way too much work to bother with.

I agree with Checkboard. Don't bother with Naruto Shippuden. Going back to episode 1 at a once a week rate would be downright painful even if they attempted to cut the filler. Viz's DVDs should continue to come out regardless if it's broadcast or not so anyone airing it once a week would end up being behind the DVD release for years if not indefinatelly. I don't believe in that "it took all the ratings" theory people spouted regarding Toonami collapsing due to Naruto but ASA already has a flapgship in Bleach and they should be sparing on long running shows at a rate of once a week (that was what hurt Yu Yu Hakusho and Gundam SEED). If they were to get one it should either be Dragon Ball or DBZ to hook nostalgics or One Piece because it has a lot more potential for audience growth than Naruto Shippuden does.

This is very exciting! I can't think of any other way to take that tweet than "good".

If it is coming back, I just wonder how soon. Was TOM being serious when he said Bleach would be on Toonami next Saturday?

What seems more likely, (1) That a renegade group of employees used network time, money, and other resources, in conjunction with outside companies, to reprogram six hours of network time and risk their jobs in an economy where jobs are scarce, or (2) That the higher ups were in on everything that was going on.

I'd say (2) is a lot more likely myself.

Of those, my hope would be for One Piece. While DBZ was a nice surprise last weekend, as an ongoing series its been run heavily on television, and a version still airs on Nicktoons. One Piece would bring the shonen, while giving another chance to a series that received some false starts in the US due to various circumstances. Plus, considering Funimation's contributions last weekend, hopefully they would be willing to give Adult Swim the uncut tapes (or at least largely uncut, I'm not familiar enough with the show to know if there is ever nudity or language above Adult Swim's standards).

Also, I can't say I wouldn't mind having YYH back, perhaps in a later slot, especially if Funimation gave Adult Swim the uncut tapes.

One Piece's language is a bit heavy early on but probably not many if any lines would need bleeps and such. The show never pushes TV-MA and rarely pushes TV-14 so it should be able to run nearly uncut other than shortening or removing OPs and EDs.

Even though I'll WHOLLY agree Bleach shouldn't be pulled from Block right now (that would be absolutely stupid) --- I do think it needs a break sometime this year. Doubling up might not be a horrible idea, but I'd like to think there's a more creative way to do it.

That being said, my point about axing filler --- yea, I'll be clear about that --- axing Bleach filler RIGHT NOW is a bad idea. I wouldn't encourage it. Future arcs --- maybe.

Understanding the sheer cost that would go into it is really the only thing that gives me pause there.

I'd like to think if that became part of the plan that the dubers and "Toonami" (I'll use that group term for now instead of refering to ASA or CN) would come up on an agreement for splitting the cost some how.

But that being said, I think this is something absolutely worth exploring for a few reasons:

Those of us who have been around the boards know whole heartily why filler exists and what the situation is in Japan when it comes to filler. Filler is something Japanese don't particularly care about because it gives them a break from the story they PROBABLY already read in the manga. Beyond that, Japan knows reruns don't do well at all and their time slots ARE expensive. For America however, most of us DID NOT read the manga and the series is new to us, but America is also much more of a "I WANT IT NOW" society. I think Americans as a whole would enjoy anime series a lot more if they weren't wrapped in filler.

We KNOW Naruto was dying to filler, we KNOW Naruto Ship (well in part) died to filler and I am actually REALLY SURPRISED that Bleach hasn't dropped ratings like a beast due to filler. The trend is, the US doesn't like filler.

Now the big million dollar question is --- does the US dislike of filler justify the money it would cost to chop it out and play the series without? I'll have to admit, my gut says yes, but I wouldn't even know how to produce numbers to demonstrate that as a possibility one way or another.

You know, every piece of logic that says "Don't bother with Naruto" applies to Onepiece too.

Neither series has gotten a proper run with someone who was really willing to stick it out, but both probably deserve it.

The big question is --- with both series being restarted several times --- how would you bring it to Toonami and how would you decide where to start it? I think in any case, if they do that --- BOTH SERIES really should run from the beginning on a perspective weekday slot. Heck, that might even be the best way to run it. I think that would be an ideal combination for weekday Toonami on Adult Swim for a 1 hour showing of action.

The problem is you made an assertion like it was fact where you have no proof especially in the face of the fact I made it clear mine was a theory.

Running a gorilla campaign like this under the guise of an "April Fools Joke" shouldn't be difficult to swing --- ESPECIALLY if its a late night block like Adult Swim.

It's no secret a lot of people at William Street disagreed with the axing of Toonami. It's no secret a lot of people at William Street have been in a creative funk for a while and have all but let ASA run on auto-pilot.

As Lelouch would say "All tasks at hand have been cleared" --- the conditions were ripe for something like this being done under the radar.

I don't think we'll ever know if this is what ACTUALLY happened, but it has that feeling about it to me that this was an internal gorilla campaign inspired in part by the consistent chat about Toonami HERE (yes CN/AS/WS people do read these forums), in part due to the Neo Toonami campaign and in part to other factors none of us here or there might be aware of.

Naruto did not die to filler in America. It was still getting very good ratings in it's filler seasons because once again filler does not put off the majority of people who watch anime on TV and it's not as if they don't realize these shows are padded they simply don't mind the addition story.

You know, every piece of logic that says "Don't bother with Naruto" applies to Onepiece too.

Well not exactly because Naruto Shippuden is the #5 show on Hulu. It's safe to say it has a very large and established fanbase and even though it's broadcasts were halted the DVD sales are no worse for it. People were given a taste of Naruto on US television that appealed enough to them to watch it however they may. One Piece's fandom is more largely internet based because the 4Kids dub was so off-putting and FUNimation's DVD sales reflect that. Simulcasting was about the best thing they could do for the time but a broadcast even at a snails pace will do much more for One Piece than Naruto Shippuden at this point. It's easy to find Naruto stuff everywhere in America. Not so much for One Piece but it's slowly getting there.

Having them run back to back from episode one on weekdays is the ideal way to re-introduce them if there is such a thing but I don't believe for even a moment Toonami will be able to do that on the current channel.

This was not an internal prank and we're flattering ourselves if we think we here at TZ or even the blokes on Neo Toonami had much of anything to do with this. Remember this is the 15th anniversary of Toonami and even the higher ups of CN and AS seem to acknowledge that. Adult Swim knew people who grew up watching Toonami were in their age group now and they also realized another airing of The Room was downright mundane so they decided to shake things up to let people know they still have some creativity over there. I'm quite sure even Mike Lazzo was in on this plan. Nobody was going to risk their job on a stunt that required talking to anime companies to get the rights to air those shows. I just don't see that as an internal uprising thing so much as... "hey Mike how about we do a Toonami night on April 1st since it's a Saturday?" "Alright we can do that but don't forget to include Astroboy". Or something like that.

I don't think they intended this to cause such a commotion but they probably should have seen it coming.

Oh, there's no way in heck that I think TZ, Neo Toonami or others were directly influential in the restart of Toonami, but I'm also sure that eyes over in the Turner family at least saw that it was still a hot topic and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it made them pause to think.

That being said, like I've said several times in this thread, my gut feeling tells me this wasn't fully sanctioned. Someone, somewhere in a highish position may have given support to this, but lets not kid ourselves on that note either --- it's not like we don't have hard proof that the guys over at William Street haven't bent the rules more then a little when they thought it was worth it.

IE I don't doubt that the higher ups knew in part that something was planned for April Fools using Toonami. They might even know the planning on some level that went into it. I doubt that the person actually signing off on the checks knew ahead of time (and I doubt even now) that they went ahead and made all new bumpers for the entire night. In other words I still tend to think details were let out. I can sit here and guess what details may or may not have been talked about with certain levels of authority, but it's overall moot. Like I said, if this was a gorilla campaign internally, I bet we won't hear about for years, if ever.

That all being said --- you did make a very good point earlier when we talked about Funi getting dropped from Verizon FIOS. Thats news I sadly just DID NOT hear a thing about. That, in my book easily makes another highly plausible theory, that Funi REALLY wants Toonami back and may have made a lot of backroom deals to try to help make it happen.

If Funi is taking the money they were using to maintain their channel and is now looking to push it into Toonami --- some very, very, very fun things could be happening very soon.

Its sad Funi lost their channel, but in the scope of Toonami, that could mean a lot of good things.

I think Naruto is too mainstream for Toonami. It's one of those of anime, which when you mention, people look at you and think you're a little kid. Naruto has become another Pokémon series. Even though both the original and Shippuden have their qualities, I like the characters and I enjoy watching both, I think most people don't have the patience to put aside their first impression and get into it. It takes time. It's too long to follow and if you miss an episode, chances are you'll miss quite alot. I don't mind the fact it's so long, but getting through all of it is not for everyone. Plus I think airing Naruto would be too risky (it didn't exactly help Toonami to say the least, more like helped slowly kill it) and doesn't fit that much with the other stuff they've been/might be airing.

Shows I'd like to see on the new Toonami:

Knights of the Zodiac
Samurai Pizza Cats
Samurai Champloo
Slayers
Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex/2nd GIG
Outlaw Star
Yu Yu Hakusho
Cyborg 009
Dragonball Z/Kai
Tenchi Muyo!
Cyber City Oedo 808
Cowboy Bebop
Ronin Warriors
G-Force: Guardians of Space
Cardcaptors

Sailor Moon
Zoids
Astro Boy
The Big O
Blue Submarine No. 6

Trigun

Movies I'd like to see on the new Toonami:

The Secret World of Arrietty
Mardock Scramble
Wicked City
Vampire Hunter D
Rock & Rule
Akira
Robot Carnival

I know, probably too much to ask for at this point... but it would make me happy :)

If we get an Adult Swim Toonami I would count out any edited only anime like Cardcaptors, Sailor Moon, Samurai Pizza cats, Nights of the Zodiac (Though Saint Seiya I would not be agianst but would they risk a show that old?)

I would see Tenchi Muyo as an obvious choice for a new Toonami however. At least the OVAs, it still has the Toonami nostalgia, plenty of stuff that could be seen on adult swim that could not be seen before, and there is the third OVA which has never been on basic cable (Expect for April first 2012.) And also it's short enough for one episode a week not being a problem.

I don't understand your hate for Naruto, Bleach, etc.

You actually in one word named the exact reason it has to be on Toonani: Mainstream.

You see, in the grand scope of things, Toonami HAS to remain mainstream. Toonami's soul purpose has been to *NEVER* bring out nitch animations/animes, it was to keep you entertained. It did that by drawling you in with the more mainstream stuff and then introducing you to some more nitch series you may not have heard of.

If Toonami about faces and goes only with nitch stuff without something to draw in the audience, how successful do you *REALLY* think a rebirth of Toonami would be? Not very. It would run the risk of spiraling the drain fast if an audience wasn't coming out to support the stuff they already know and love.

Just because Disney treated Naruto Ship badly, doesn't mean its not something that deserves a place on Toonami. On exactly the same note, just because 4Kids treated Onepiece badly does not mean it doesn't deserve (another) chance on Toonami.

The big thing I'd like to of dig my heels in on (as if I was a decision maker here >.>) when it comes to the very long running series (Bleach, Naruto and Onepiece), Toonami / AS / CN / Turner need a way to be able to logically cycle the series on and off the schedule without the audience feeling like they are really falling behind.

We have 40 years of TV history that proves when you keep a series on non-stop, forever; viewership fades. When a series is allowed to take a break, the series ratings run stronger. Bleach has been on Adult Swim for the better part of 4 years without much breaks and I do think it's getting stagnate. New Toonami bumpers will shake that up a bit --- but how much?

If someone (William Street and/or the dub companies) went through and trimmed the fat and made the series break into nice 13 or 26 episode chunks where you could take the series off for a logical amount of time without falling incredibly behind the world releases, I bet they would do a lot better. I actually have very little doubt they would --- bared that the trimming of the fat is done artistically (and probably mostly filler).

Shows I'd like to see on the new Toonami:

Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex/2nd GIG
Cowboy Bebop
The Big O
Sailor Moon

GitS, Cowboy Bebop and Big O *ALL* need to be off the air for like a year minimum. Adult Swim has been relying on all these series far too much because they have virtually free reign of all three series. Adult Swim has fallen into the same trap with these three series as Boomerang has fallen in with almost the entire channel.

Sailormoon I would love to see on but the rights are in such a mess ---- however --- in doing some quick research (IE going to Wiki and looking up the cited material), it looks like Toei might be finally starting to ease up a little. Moreover, it looks like Funi COULD be the guys who might be able to get their hands on the property again.

A nearly uncut Outlaw Star would be beautiful, as would Hakusho and maybe DBoxZ.

I'm also hoping for Tiger and Bunny. This is a perfect show toonami can have fun with and could be quite a hit, it's short and has upcoming movies.

Naruto Shippuden has about the same shounen elements and content as Bleach. Since Bleach is doing fine, Naruto Shippuden would be unlikely to alienate too many viewers. Especially the kids/teens who liked Naruto three years back. They'd have to do double premieres to catch up, or skip some episodes entirely, but the show can work. Toonami needs mainstream shows to survive and air the non-mainstream stuff, and besides, I doubt that Naruto Shippuden will overshadow the other programming the way Naruto did under an [adult swim] style Toonami. Also, there are plenty of older fans of Naruto, and it is the fifth most popular show, and most popular anime, on Hulu. It's not quite the same as Pokemon in appeal, since it definately skews older, and the story and themes are fairly dark, so there isn't a lot of shame for adults in watching it. Honestly, all the Naruto hatred comes from those who haven't watched a lot of anime or ever seen any, and the people who blame it for Toonami's demise. As for the later assumption, it really is the fault of Cartoon Network's programming strategy, which focused on Naruto too much, making the other shows and Toonami less important and easily replacable.

Also, those shows you've mentioned are all...old. They've aired before, many of them (looking at you Cowboy Bebop) repeatedley and endlessly. A reborn Toonami shouldn't dwell in the past. Nostalgic viewers might turn in for their old favorites for a while, but most of the time the ratings falter in a matter of weeks, or at best remain below average. There's pplenty of newer stuff that should be invested into Toonami. One Piece especially could use another chance; it's online popularity signals that a television return with the uncut dub could be effectual. Fairy Tail and Case Closed are continuing series, the like of which Toonami could really use, even though I feel they are too immature to be aired on an [adult swim] Toonami (but they aired Kekaishi so....). Sgt. Frog is a children's comedy series in Japan, but like it's spiritual sucessor Shin Chan it got a more adult friendly gag dub, and it has a lot of episodes, so it's fairly viable. There are plenty more shows that Toonami could air, plenty of obscure and senin titles, and plenty of content they could cycle in. A token showing of older series like Outlaw Star is welcome occasionaly, but I'd rather them pick up series like Zatch Bell, MAR, or even Prince of Tennis again because they still have episodes not shown in America, and thus can have premieres return to Toonami if they do well.

I'm hoping that, as far as american series go, we see The Boondocks, Black Dynamite, and The Venture Bros. with premiere epsiodes, alongside the likes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Thundercats (2011), and Young Justice in reruns. I doubt stuff like the latter three shows I just mentioned would do well, but I think the former three have enough action and quality to warrant them a place on Toonami. Time permitting of course.

[adult swim]'s tweet has me wondering though. It seems unlikely, but we could see Toonami back as early as this Saturday. I doubt it, but ther's enough time to just put up a couple wraparounds. If Toonami indeed comes back, I hope that it either comes back with new shows or has a promo like the sixth anniversary one (the one that debuted the T.O.M. 3 era look) that promotes the newer shows. Toonami can't survive if the only new content each week is Bleach. It would be 2008 all over again.

What I hope they will do if they bring Toonami back would be to showcase the first episode of a different and obscure anime each week. It would be good promotion for the anime industry and a lot of titles that wouldn't sell well otherwise.

Regardless, I'm excited for a Toonami revival. It may just be a rebranded [adult swim] action block, but with the right atmosphere, and new content, it could be an expereince worth watching, and worth [adult swim]'s money as well.

I just wondered, would the Boondocks be included in the revival of Toonami as well?

I don't see why it would be. Good show but it stinks of unecessary comedy infusion. Venture and Dynamite are more suitable but as they can and will air on other nights, no need to include them in Toonami, maybe all 3 as pre-Toonami but not within Toonami even if it started at 9. Though I guess if Toonami started at 9 I would not object to an hour comedy break around the half way point. But no comedy infusion if Toonami starts at midnight.

Maybe, maybe not. When Toonami was on Cartoon Network, action shows like Ben 10 and Totally Spies aired out of the block, after all. [adult swim] doesn't even classify The Boondocks as an action show, but as a comedy, so that makes it somewhat unlikely that they'd put it on a new Toonami. Especially one limite to 12am-6am on Saturday nights. But if they extended the block, I think The Boondocks has enough action-y elements to warrant a place on the revived Toonami.

Honestly, though, we probably are only going to see anime on a Toonami on [adult swim]. It would be nice if they would put The Boondocks, The Venture Bros., and Black Dynamite on for variety's sake, but I sincerely doubt that will happen.

Would be nice, though.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
