Well, we're a mere 2 hours away from midnight here on the East Coast and I'm sitting here with a bourbon in hand wondering what the heck I'm going to be seeing when the clock strikes 12:00....

Will it be a Toonami intro? Will it be the standard Adult Swim advisory warning? Or will it be an announcement for a future Toonami return date and/or a bumper card mentioning all the support for the block? Ugh, I hate the anticipation, lol.

Just a note, the programming guide for Comcast still shows the same ol' same ol' Saturday night programming for Adult Swim so if Toonami packaging was to return it most likely wouldn't be with classic Toonami programming. Which makes me wonder if a Toonami return would even be worth it without some fresh (or old) programming to sink our teeth into, because again, slapping a Toonami branding on the current anime lineup just seems.......cheap.

Whelp, in case its not obvious --- its confirmed in real time --- no Toonami bumpers or anything of the kin tonight.

I still wonder if there might be some sort of commercial or spot light or something to talk about last weeks happenings. I would have expected it at the beginning of Bleach or beginning of Adult Swim if something was going to happen though.

I'd get all Freakazoid on them if they did that -- (and too add irony, they end up playing another Toonami night)

They would not give us any kind of notice on TV until AFTER they had reach a decision, and a decision like this will be a BIG one... Executives don't make these kinds of decisions in just one week; they could debate about this for weeks or even months before they reach a decision. The most we might get is stuff off the twitter's of those involved that might say something off the record and unofficial. Really, if they are seriously considering bringing back toonami, i might say that we might not hear about it for weeks or even months... hell it might even be something they might think to bring back next year which means we might not hear about it till the end of the year, since CN won't go blabbing about it until when its relatively soon coming up

I'd bet on Andrew making an extended post about this in a day or so (after Sakura Con is over) but we had an interesting chat last night about some information he found out there.

Some of this info might give you guys some neat insight to what may go on with scheduling for a potential new Toonami block.

One of the first revelations to throw out is: Those who thought that Adult Swim essentially traded DVD adds for the rights to do a one night rebroadcast of those series were dead on the money. Adult Swim did get the rights for those series for that trade (at least Funi confirmed that). That being said this was a once and done deal. It doesn't mean that Funi or anyone else would continue to do this. A deal might be able to be struck where they get reduced cost on series, but its not going to be an even exchange. That should make obvious sense, because, in all honesty, how effective are those DVD adds going to be after week 12 of running them on a series that's been running just as long? It does carry a powerful impact for a one night showing ALONG with the adds.

Next up, Andrew found out that Funi actually has an interesting package they offer to broadcasters. If they buy the rights to two newer series, they can also get the rights to 1-2 older series for free. Keep in mind, this is only Funi. Details from other companies are unknown, but are suggested to be not as good. That being said, one would suspect that if a series like DBZ or YYH were chosen as the "old series", then they would probably only get one because they are long series with huge episode counts.

The last major thing that Andrew found out is exactly why Nick didn't run the Buu Saga from the old series. Funimation counts DBZ and DBZ Kai as two different series. In order for Nick to be able to run DBZ's Buu Saga, it would require them to purchase rights for the entire DBZ series.

Well they didn't say that there was no monetary payment for using the shows but ads were part of the deal.

I also did not intend to imply they made package deals. That was hypothetical based on the reasoning that Funi had the most backlog and also plenty of new shows.

Viz announced InuYasha The Final Act will get a 3 disc boxset this Fall. That should cover half the series. No mention of broadcast but if it will air then Summer is a safe bet.

I asked the Shonen Jump rep if Viz had more than streaming rights for the Reborn anime and he said they do not own the rights so it is like how Viz Anime includes One Piece. TV Tokyo uploaded the Crunchyroll streams so they probably also control the Hulu stream.

Aniplex said there are still no plans to dub Blue Exorcist and made it sound like there was no interest for a Madoka broadcast.

I am 99% sure I wont make it back to the con this weekend so that's all the snooping I was able to do. But I met Steve Blum and at his panel he showed the opening to Toonami on April 1st. Wish I could have chatted with him for a bit but he only had one autograph session and I never bummed into him at the con.

Bummer, I was hoping things might work out for you to actually talk to him, but I know how conventions are. Those guys are running on fumes by the end.

So --- here's something to think about. There's of course a lot of hype just now about getting Toonami up and running again --- now, a week later, we KNOW FIRST HAND there's a lot of support. With the initial "OMG" hype starting to die, now we should really start talking about what new things we want to see on Toonami.

Everyone has weighted in largely to say "I want Toonami and I like the old stuff". So we know that for the short term, Toonami could probably program the block with a bunch of old stuff and ride nostalgia for a while to help them build capital. But what's really going to make Toonami glow is what new acquisitions could really pull people in.

For the moment, lets not talk too much about Naruto or Onepiece. They are series we know CAN serve as anchor series.

Hopefully I haven't missed something in the thread about this, but I don't recall seeing much.

So, how about a little franchise known as Gundam...

Outside of Dragonball, there is no franchise more associated with Toonami, and while DBZ may have helped put Toonami on the map, Gundam Wing was the first show to exclusively debut on Toonami and become a huge hit. Six more Gundam series followed on Toonami, including one, Gundam SEED, being used for another previous Toonami relaunch.

Currently, signs are pointing towards Toonami relaunching once again, and there is once again a new Gundam series, Gundam Age.

Does anyone know theoretically how soon Gundam Age could be ready for a dubbed broadcast? Perhaps we could have Toonami debut with a new Gundam series once again...

Bandai Entertainment is dead and half-burried. Don't expect a new Gundam show any time soon unless Funi elects to rescue the license.
