C&C - Toonami Talkback [4/1]

I always thought One Piece would be a good fit with Nicktoons, mainly because Nicktoons would air premieres 4-5 times a week and give the show ample reruns. Adult Swim would air it once a week and that's it.

THIS.
One Piece belongs on Nicktoons, unless [as] decided to bring back the Midnight Run or as such, weeknights? One Piece needs to run on Nicktoons next to Avatar and DBZ Kai reruns.

Well very much the same can be said for Naruto Shippuden.

Nicktoons seems to have no interest in One Piece though.

One Piece is easy enough to edit for kids for a few seasons but it is going to become a lot harder to edit for kids here as the series continues. It'll be a long long journey on Adult Swim but editing will never become a concern.

FUNi may or may not have edited episodes for the first 2 seasons. Viz already has at least 98 episodes pre-edited in Shippuden's case.

I'm all for Nicktoons or The Hub getting Shippuden and One Piece but it honestly seems more likely for them to air on AS if they ever air on US television again. Particularly under the Toonami brand.

While I think it would have been great to see One Piece on NickToons, I think that if they were going to pick it up they probably would have done so by now. Considering Kai and now GT air on there, I would guess that FUNimation may have even pitched it to them multiple times.

Why does Naruto Shippuden make more sense than One Piece? This is Toonami on Adult Swim. Naruto up until recently was still being marketed at kids where as One Piece went the strictly older fan route when it left television in 2008. Granted Kai is marketed to kids but DBZ has that power of nostalgia.

From a business stand point Viz has plenty of reason to get Naruto back on TV but what if they are still stuck with DXD? DBZ and OP are currently free agents, Naruto's status is not entirely known but even if Disney did not buy more they probably still have 1-100 or whatever for at least a year or more.

One Piece has a great big fat problem in Toei and that among other things could keep it from airing on Adult Swim.

The substantial difference in this scenario is Toei and that is why it is more vital for One Piece to get a TV deal and grow a larger audience. That could be the difference between getting more One Piece and having the US release get cut short. Naruto is in no real danger because it sells that much better. That's what I mean when I say Shippuden can do without a TV deal. Viz did not hault the dub release because DXD gave it the boot. One Piece will finally get part of season 4 four years after season 3 was taken off the air and we did not get most of season 3 on DVD until what 2 years after it was removed from television? Heck of a long wait. Mind you I'm grateful they redubbed the first 2 seasons but that was a heck of a cliffhanger for anyone who had not already seen the rest of Skypiea.

And let's consider ratings no matter how you slice it those 98 episodes of Shippuden are more like reruns than the 205 episodes of One Piece because they aired more recently and besides about 24-26 of those One Piece episodes they are more dramatically different edited vs. uncensored. But both have the issue of having over 100 episodes already on DVD. I'd still figure more viewers have already seen Shippuden than One Piece so despite Shippuden being more popular I would not be surprised if One Piece actually did better.

The argument is pretty much void if DXD still has Shippuden though.

And while I never believed the theories that Naruto brought Toonami's demise. I still don't want Toonami to be a glorified Naruto premiere slot again.

From a budget stand point, DBZ makes the most sense if they can only get one because it has and will draw a crowd. If they can afford two it could go either way. Maybe from a business stand point Naruto Shippuden has the edge as Naruto was and is more successful but I heavily question if much growth can be made for Shippuden.

"Naruto" and "One Piece" have pretty much both been in the same boat from get-go: kids shows with a strong adult following. Doesn't matter that "One Piece" went off T.V. before "Naruto", I wouldn't even say it went to a strictly older audience from there. Besides a lot of people still know "One Piece" in its 4Kids form; the show is not automatically more "adult" than "Naruto" now simply because it lost a lot of its younger audience members more quickly.

And thing is as far as content goes, "DBZ", "Naruto", and "One Piece" are all pretty much just as "adult" and as "kiddy" as each other in all regards. All three really would fit just as fine as the other on the same programming block.

And it seems more likely that "Naruto Shippuden" is up for grabs than not. I mean do you remember when VIZ was partnered up with the now defunct T3 group to pitch some of their shows to television? Two of the shows mentioned in the press release were "Naruto" and "Naruto Shippuden".

Also how do we know Toei Animation would have a problem at this point in putting "One Piece" on adult swim Toonami? Maybe they would since they'd probably rather market it towards kids. Maybe not. None of us here really know what their current policies are. But they clearly don't have a problem letting "One Piece" and "DBZ" being targeted towards teens and 18-25 year-olds, because FUNimation is doing it all the time with those properties. I'd guess that if they have the opportunity to get one of their biggest shows on mainstream television again, they'll take it, and you've already pointed that out.

Also how do you think "Naruto Shippuden" got where it is where "One Piece" isn't? Because it's had a more successful TV run, it really goes a long way. Your argument seems to indicate that certain shows are more "deserving" of being on T.V. than others, but fact is from now till the series whether "Naruto" can keep that up with a T.V. deal. I'm not saying it "needs" it the same way "One Piece" does, but hey it should be pointed out that enthusiasm for the series has certainly died down with fans despite its continued dominance in the anime industry.

Also haulting the dub of "One Piece" I think had more to do with the fact that FUNimation redubbed and released the first two seasons on DVD way before season 3 so it must've took a while to get that out of the way and get started on a new season. "Naruto" and "Naruto Shippuden" never had that problem, they just kept dubbing on through consistently. Essentially both series have been surviving without TV just fine, one longer than the other mind you but I think both series are pretty much on equal footing.

And as far as both having a ton of episodes already out there? They're both a slog of reruns. Many, many fans have already seem them already. If they wanted to see "One Piece" or "Shippuden" by now they would've probably already watched them. So what will probably get the most viewers? The show that's more heavily-liked, that's "Naruto".

Yes I believe from airing on Toonami "One Piece" has more chance to grow than "Naruto Shippuden". "One Piece" still has less exposure than "Naruto" as of now. But as far as what will get more viewers? Probably "Naruto Shippuden".

So really coming back?

So is Toonami really coming back? I might have to consider getting cable again.

It's not entirely confirmed but signs are pointing to yes.

They are at least heavily considering bringing back the Toonami block to Adult Swim most likely replacing the current action block on Saturday nights but the shows airing there could remain on the line-up or cycle in again depending on how many shows they buy for this Toonami revival.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to swing by here more often to keep apprised of the situation.

This suddenly made me hopeful for Toonami on CN rather than just Adult Swim. But just AS Toonami is more than fine.

It's unlikely.

He's only the VP of Marketing and Promotions. He doesn't control acquisitions.

But, Toonami comes under "Promotions", right? And we should be seeing some DeMarco flavored CN promos, or maybe even blocks...

Yes I would think everything but the shows themselves was marketing and promotion strategies. Sounds like he'll be part of planning upfronts so those are gonna get way more interesting I'll bet.

Also "partnerships" interests me. We may see some more strategic partnerships forged that will benefit action animation on CN and AS in the years to come.

The co-creator of Toonami is back at Cartoon Network, and as VP of Promotion and Marketing?! That's awesome news. It may not be an automatic guarantee for Toonami's comeback, but it certainly must leave the door for it more open.

Plus, this is great news for DC Nation and other programs.

This is great news, and I can't help but think the April Fools thing helped DeMarco lock this job in (though his existing resume would make him damn tempting to any network,) but I second the cautious optimism of other people in the thread. This could be more about using his promotional smarts than his programming tastes, but on the whole, that'd still be good for CN and AS.

However, I will say it's sympathetic to the odds of getting back. Bringing him in that job probably isn't just about using his skills to create better brand devotion to CN and AS, and even if it is, Toonami could easily be part of that strategy.

....is he aware of Rolls of the Crunchy variety?

Said Rolls don't dubs, so they're probably not of interest to CN.

Smartest most realistic thing they could do anime partnership-wise would probably be to get a carte blanche deal with Bandai given that the company is basically dead on its own despite still holding onto many great licenses. Gurren Lagann and Outlaw Star among other shows could then air on Toonami, Big O Season 1 could finally air alongside season 2, and maybe even Gundam AGE could get a deal on regular CN with CN getting some sort of merchandise profits.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
The characters from Netflix's Mating Season apparently were born from the same deeps as the Warner Bros cartoon characters
