So! I’m just gonna dig up this thread, seeing how we only have, what, two episodes left?
I’ve gushed about the show enough, so I think some criticisms would be appropriate now!
Gary’s dialogue, good God. This show knows how to push my buttons with his ‘talking for the sake of talking’ dialogue. I get a few chuckles out of what he says, but I’m often cringing for most. I’m afraid that people will dismiss this show solely because of Gary’s dialogue. His saving grace though is that he’s written to shut up when the story calls for it, and that honestly saves his character for me. Like talking keeps him sane.
Little Cato comes off as a teensy bit hard for me to get attached to. Perhaps because he’s a bit too young to have that bromanticness Gary had with his dad. He seems to be written like a edgy teenager, but I think he got over Avacato’s death too quickly. It would have been great if he and Gary bonded over lost fathers earlier than that one time after Gary’s flashback experience. And what about his mother? THEIR mothers?
Quinn and the Space...thing she was a part of feels like was lost in the flurry of sparkling animation, like a good chunk of this show tbh. After all of the talks about Titans, Final Space, the breach and the Lord Commander, I’ve forgotten what perils are going on aside from keeping Mooncake out of LC’s hands. And now Final Space is apparently a MATTER taking the form of our cute resident facehugger? Sometimes I wish the show would STOP blowing me away and break things down Barney-style from time to time.
I do like the progression of Gary and Quinn’s relationship though. I know some people might not enjoy the stalker Gary getting close to his victi-I mean, subject of his affection, but he’s not THAT desperate and again, is written to shut down that cringey side of himself when things get serious. He’s also not a horn dog if him being tied up naked by Nightfall didn’t excite him in the way one would have expected a character like him to respond.
The Galaxy One and HUE by extension is probably the hardiest character next to Gary. It’s faced almost every space threat cliche out there and has not only stayed in one piece, but has rebuilt itself too. And judging from how the flash forwards every episode opens with still includes HUR, my theory looks solid.
Overall, with 2 episodes to go, this show is still amazing in how it could have been A MILLION times worse. It could have been a straight-up comedy where Gary never shuts up and filled to the brim with shock humor. I still enjoy it because it’s clear the crew cared about telling a story, instead of trying to cash in on the adult animation train of ugly designs and shock humor.
