"Final Space" News & Discussion Thread (spoilers)

Becoming toxic like how MLP-FIM or How Steven Universe was.

I don't know much about how toxic and bad those got. But I'm finding the fandom for Rick and Morty to become insufferable and terrible. And I don't mean everybody. But the hardcore fans are certainly becoming horrible.

Out of curiosity have you met any of those fans because I find the anti-Rick and Morty fans to be even more annoying than the hardcore fans.

Also can I say again how glad I am to have an adult cartoon not with not "good animation" but great animation especially for this episode it felt as if it got even better. I can say that Final Space's animation is better than 90% of anime.

I mean I can't say with certainty. I mean I am a fan of Rick and Morty. I really like and enjoy the show. It's not my favorite show out there, but I think it's a very clever and well done and creative show.

I'm not anti-Rick and Morty by any means. I'm specifically referring to the hardcore fans acting toxic and harassing the creators and Twitter or delivering death threats to the female writers or causing riots over McNugget sauce.

But what's more annoying than the fans who are so hardcore about this show that they are harassing the writers because they are women and feel they've somehow softened Rick or some such malarkey?

Honestly, yeah they kind of are. I feel people should learn to just divorce the show from its fanbase. It's not the show's fault the McDonalds riot happened, for instance. It was just a funny joke that the fans took to China and back.

Yes, you can. If I hadn't already expressed my own thoughts on this ad nauseum, I would too. This is why we need to spread the word of this show; if it becomes a smash hit, adult animation may finally have higher animation quality standards that are on par, if not even higher, than more family-oriented cartoons.

Episode 7:

- My favorite thing after is that after Gary's sentence ends he gourds himself on his freedom cookies. I didn't think we'd ever actually see him eating the cookies. But I'm glad we saw it. The cookies aren't even that good!
- "Kevin is a jag-off Gary. You know that." HUE has very good comedic timing.
- So now we have finally some sort of explanation on what Final Space is. It's some type of gate way to another dimension filled with Eldritch Abominations, or as this show calls them, "Titans."
- I enjoy that Gary despite being a meathead is sort of prude-ish and genteel when it came to Future Quinn/Nightfall aggressively coming on to him. Yeah, Gary is a meathead, but he's a nice meathead. Not a douchebag meathead.
- Kevin was generally hilarious this episode. It seems despite his function of being like a sanity companion for prisoners, he ends up doing the exact opposite. I have a theory that Kevin being a sanity companion aboard prison ships basically made him go insane.
- "We'll get through it together...as a team...as a squad...as a team-squad."

So! I’m just gonna dig up this thread, seeing how we only have, what, two episodes left?

I’ve gushed about the show enough, so I think some criticisms would be appropriate now!

Gary’s dialogue, good God. This show knows how to push my buttons with his ‘talking for the sake of talking’ dialogue. I get a few chuckles out of what he says, but I’m often cringing for most. I’m afraid that people will dismiss this show solely because of Gary’s dialogue. His saving grace though is that he’s written to shut up when the story calls for it, and that honestly saves his character for me. Like talking keeps him sane.

Little Cato comes off as a teensy bit hard for me to get attached to. Perhaps because he’s a bit too young to have that bromanticness Gary had with his dad. He seems to be written like a edgy teenager, but I think he got over Avacato’s death too quickly. It would have been great if he and Gary bonded over lost fathers earlier than that one time after Gary’s flashback experience. And what about his mother? THEIR mothers?

Quinn and the Space...thing she was a part of feels like was lost in the flurry of sparkling animation, like a good chunk of this show tbh. After all of the talks about Titans, Final Space, the breach and the Lord Commander, I’ve forgotten what perils are going on aside from keeping Mooncake out of LC’s hands. And now Final Space is apparently a MATTER taking the form of our cute resident facehugger? Sometimes I wish the show would STOP blowing me away and break things down Barney-style from time to time.

I do like the progression of Gary and Quinn’s relationship though. I know some people might not enjoy the stalker Gary getting close to his victi-I mean, subject of his affection, but he’s not THAT desperate and again, is written to shut down that cringey side of himself when things get serious. He’s also not a horn dog if him being tied up naked by Nightfall didn’t excite him in the way one would have expected a character like him to respond.

The Galaxy One and HUE by extension is probably the hardiest character next to Gary. It’s faced almost every space threat cliche out there and has not only stayed in one piece, but has rebuilt itself too. And judging from how the flash forwards every episode opens with still includes HUR, my theory looks solid.

Overall, with 2 episodes to go, this show is still amazing in how it could have been A MILLION times worse. It could have been a straight-up comedy where Gary never shuts up and filled to the brim with shock humor. I still enjoy it because it’s clear the crew cared about telling a story, instead of trying to cash in on the adult animation train of ugly designs and shock humor.

I have to say, this is quite the cartoon.

Will it make it to a next season though? Numbers are pretty weak for an American Dad followup. Just check wiki.

It would suck if this didn't get a 2nd season; I only wish Rick & Morty were this good - watching said show again and being in love with it at first..... Compared to THIS, a show that's actually doing what's necessary to do proper action with minimal comedy properly, they really didn't do so well at all (so much that I can only hope the 4th season, should it ever happen, for R&M is its last...), IMHO.

Honestly, I kinda hope it doesn’t get a season 2. Gary’s character could VERY easily get flanderized into that ‘never shut up’ kind of guy and I’d hate to see seasonal rot get its grubby hands on this show.

I think Olan Rogers knows better than to let that happen.

And I, for one sooooo want this to get a season 2 just so the success could convince executive that maybe putting legitimate effort into the animation might actually be viable, and not just rip off Family Guy stiff or South Park avant garde. If you don't have a starting point, you can't have progress. And I kind of doubt this would've even been greenlit if it weren't for TBS just starting out in adult animation.

Live ratings have become kind of obsolete in the current TV landscape. For what it's worth, the show is doing well on iTunes and has trended marginally more than OK KO as of late.

But people should still spread the word however they can. I simply can't let this be a one-season wonder, we need more variety in adult animation people.

I hope it gets renewed for another season, I really want this new TBS animation block to stay for a while. After The Cops was cancelled before it even aired, and Tarantula being quietly released and quietly cancelled, this, American Dad! and Close Enough are all we have left currently unless TBS picks up more animated series.

Well shut me the heck up, after that season finale, a season 2 is already overdue. I can’t remember the last time seeing the credits roll made me rage.

@Rhaynebow
You didn't watch Infinity War did you
So pretty good finale and I'm really hoping we get a season 2 because man, am I blue balled after that.

I haven't seen the last three episodes yet (time constraints; should be open within the next week though), but I just want this to get a season 2 for the sake of adult animation as a whole. We need more things on the same level as this.

"For the sake of".......don't you think you are being melodramatic over this?. I said before it's not like serious adult animation is over just because Final Space may have underperformed

Well keep in mind there aren't a lot of adult cartoons with good animation and an actual story so while it won't destroy the potential of adult animation it is going set back it and we are going to have mostly this.

Maybe I am, but I feel like the only way adult animation can get out of its low-quality, raunchfest rut is if shows like this become a big hit and thus convince producers that maybe actually putting more money and effort into the animation (y'know, the thing that makes cartoons cartoons) is actually worth pursuing. I'm sick and tired of seeing adult shows, even the good ones, contain weak or just straight up unappealing visuals, and if you don't have a starting point - which this would be - you can't have progress.

It's not that serious adult animation may be over, it's that if it weren't for TBS greenlighting this show it wouldn't have even begun.

How did the show do in the ratings? All praise aside, a good reason why these adult shows end up having such low quality animation is because they typically end up getting cancelled after a season or two anyway. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see how expensive this show HAD to be. Cliffhanger ending or no, if this show didn’t pull in the numbers, we can kiss season 2 goodbye.

Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
