"Kaiju No. 8" Season Two Talkback

Poor Kikoru. It's one thing to lose your father before your eyes, it's another thing to see a Kaiju parroting his body and you're utterly powerless to fight it. Not that Kaiju No. 8 an Narumi are doing much better.

You know it's bad when Kaiju No. 8 is getting drawback damage from a punch clash, though Kaiju No. 9 ALSO gets drawback damage from their fists bumping, and realizes that he hasn't fully acclimated to Isao's body and that Kaiju No. 8 is the biggest threat that can destabilize his body. So his best method is to cause an AoE explosion to give him cover to escape.

Kafka and Narumi are totally unharmed from said blast! Well, that's kind of anticlimactic, but I guess a good ol' fashioned targeting other people (like Kurusu and Kikoru) to distract them will work too. Though Kaiju No. 9 shifting to Isao's face and voice to herald the new era of Kaiju as he flies off was pretty unsettling AND insulting.

Isao was a legend to the Defense Force AND Japan, so his funeral deserves full honors, a 21 gun salute, all the divisions and captains, and even Narumi saluting a man who was one of the few people he truly respects and idolized.

Some would say it's bad optics for a daughter not to attend her own fathers' funeral, let alone a breach in military protocol, but when you see Kikoru collapsed over her fathers' desk crying her heart out...can you blame her? But Kikoru knows that she can't rest until she's freed her fathers' body from Kaiju No. 9, and that means she needs training from Narumi to get even stronger. And it feels fitting for Narumi to train Kikoru like her father trained him!

Kikoru vs Shinonome! Kikoru has to train and overcome every Platoon Leader in the 1st Division before Narumi finishes his game if she wants to be ready to be trained by him! I only hope we can get more Shinonome screentime because of Kana Hanazawa.

So what WAS Isao working on that now Isami is aware of? Especially when it looks human.

Kafka returning back to his apartment after so long! Nice reminder of everything that makes him human, which is all the more important now that parts of him are NOT changing back from Kaiju form...meaning in all likelihood the more he transforms, the more likely he is to stay a Kaiju and never become human again.

So why not revisit his roots and go back to the cleanup crew? It's like Kafka never left and he fits in just as well! Bro really knows how to saw through Kaiju!

Toku may be an alcoholic gambling addict, but he's a good boss and he still has faith the Defense Force can turn things around! Also, congratulations on your daughters' wedding!

Practically, continuing to employ Kafka in battle is a liability, but right now Narumi doesn't care whether Kafka is liable to become a full Kaiju or not, he'll slay Kafka himself if he has to, all he cares about is taking down No. 9 and Kaiju No. 8 is their best option to achieve that. He even calls Kafka by name! And they both have a score to settle with No. 9 to commiserate over. It's finally time for the Defense Force (and some season 1 faces we haven't seen in a while outside an OVA) Counterattack!

Kaiju No. 10 isn't dead!? They've got his spine and head frozen!? And Hoshina's there to see him!?

It's nice to see Mina and Okonogi again since we haven't seen them in a while and Mina is barely getting speaking appearances as it is. Even if both her and Hoshina now fully understand just how much Okonogi does and feel bad for taking advantage of her.

You know what’s sinking S2? It isn’t just the tropes, it’s that you can see the moment the manga slid from “tight, fresh idea” into “gotta keep up with serialization,” and now it’s laid bare on screen. The little hints in S1 were there (pacing quirks, odd detours), but in S2 they’ve bloomed into full-blown stall tactics. Instead of building momentum, the story just keeps pumping the brakes.

The baffling production drop makes it worse. I don’t know if any of y’all have noticed, but the audio mix this season is rough. Voices are crystal clear, but the score and sound effects feel flat. Explosions should rattle, clashes should punch, instead everything sounds muted. In S1, even weak cuts got elevated by the soundtrack; now, with the animation dip, even that safety net’s gone.

And I cannot stress enough how the storytelling decisions feel ripped out of a 2000s filler playbook, which is pure insanity when you’ve only got 12 episodes to work with:

• MC loses his powers.
• Villain retreats on the brink of defeat (again).
• Obligatory flashback power-up.
• “Not even my final form.”

Back when shows had 300+ episodes, I mean yeah, those were obligatory stall moves. But in a short cour, it feels like a total narrative fumble. I swear I can see the shift from “let’s tell this story right” to “let’s keep the machine running” happening in real time. And that’s what stings: Kaiju No. 8 had the makings of a show that could break the mold and instead, it doubled down.

At this point, I’ll probably drop it from my weeklies. Sakamoto Days S2 is getting a lot of love, so I might just catch up on that.

Episode 6 (19) "Compatible User" - August 23, 2025
Reno Ichikawa has been chosen to wild the power of Numbers Weapon 6, the most powerful of them all.

So it seems history is repeating itself. Divisions will have to leave rivalries aside and work together to overcome a kaiju king but will endure many sacrifices. If it wasn't bad enough with Kaiju No. 9, Kaiju No. 10 was just a prototype so 11 and on will be even more powerful.

Leveling up the new generation to their max has become even more important than usual. Coming up with a slew of new tactics from scratch. And the question of can Hoshino control Weapon 10 and can Reno control Weapon 6.

The stakes and goals are now set.

Kaiju No. 10 is nothing more than a head and a spine, but that doesn't make him any less ferocious or dangerous...and he has answers about Kaiju No. 9, his creator. But all he asks in return? Is to become a Kaiju Weapon to be wielded by his fellow Battle Junkie Hoshina. And even if Hoshina's getting bad vibes from this whole situation, he knows he can't refuse, he just has to be the dominant one in this possible partnership. And No. 10 seems like he might be into that.

Ah, I see that there are special rivalries among the divisions...especially the 1st and 3rd Divisions. Though I guess it's mostly because Narumi has such a fragile ego and hates anyone who shows him up or steps into his territory, and his division follows suit. Though Hoshina is able to bite back with some casual critical hits. Good thing Hasegawa is the only one both divisions mutually respect that he can stop this from ending in a real turf war.

Nice to see some of the other captains. Igarashi, who wears braces! Ogata, who needs his vice-captain Toko to keep from drinking on the job! And they all kind of snipe at each other while also roasting Narumi (can you blame them?). But they all really need to come together as a group if they want to stop No. 9, especially if he has the capability of creating Numbered level Kaiju and is sitting on a throne in Isao's body as his Kaiju slowly incubate!

Oh hey, actual Kaiju lore for why they exist in this setting! And explaining what No. 9 is doing! Cool.

Kaiju No. 6 was the KING OF KAIJU, so dangerous that he was the Kaiju Kikoru's mom died fighting, and no one has been able to wield the armor made of his body. But one recruit has the best synchronization rate and the best possibility of being able to wield it: Kafka's best bro Ichikawa!

I like Ogata! He seems like a pretty reasonable and fair captain, if prone to drink, and puts into perspective for Ichikawa how much danger he might be in if he wields this armor. But Ichikawa won't refuse an opportunity to catch up to Kafka.

Dang, if wielding just the arms of Kaiju No. 6 is enough to pit Ichikawa against the raw power of a Kaiju, a fight he might not be able to win, how can he wield the full armor? But he's still going to try!

Narumi and Hoshina taking their beef to the radio!

Episode 7 (20) "Wall" - August 30, 2025
Iharu and Reno’s trust in each other becomes a powerful weapon that leads them in battle.

Definitely one of the better episodes and a much needed focus on two characters from last season, Iharu and Reno. Iharu's arc is getting interesting, his dilemma of what happens to a genius when he's now in the presence of other amazing geniuses. He hit a wall but still perseveres and he saves Reno in defiance of orders. It's interesting he's sort of in Kafka's S1 boat. They note he's only 24% yet he displayed more than that as he searched for Reno among the ice. He knows Reno all too well and knows what he needs. Whereas Reno is struggling with becoming more powerful for Kakfa's sake to perhaps to assuage his own guilt in not being strong enough at the end of last season but so much that the No. 6 suit preys on that. Together, it looks like the dynamic duo is ready to finish the mission.

Nice tidbit they seem to have certain recurring infestations timed to when they return. Can't go wrong with Dino kaiju either. The head one reacted to Reno's power, too.

Okay this episode was basically, "free rays are cool." Of course, aren't you supposed to shout "freeze ray" when you use a freeze ray?

haru might not look it with his delinquent character design, but he was actually always the top of his neutralization class! It's why he always felt confident that he could keep excelling and reach the heights of the Big Three (Mina, Isao, Narumi). And why he feels so self-conscious seeing Ichikawa be the one to get a Numbered Kaiju suit.

No better way to test Ichikawa's efficiency with the No. 6 than a real battle, against some mole Honju and Yoju, and dang it if he doesn't look cool (literally) in that blue suit! He even gets a battle mask! And every step he takes creates ice beneath his feet! It's awesome!

Of course Ichikawa still has to fine-tune his use of the suit, and yet once he's in the zone...he's soloing Yoju after Yoju after Yoju. Freezing them so efficiently and destroying their core while the rest of his squadmates could barely make a dent in them. This is the true power of a Number weapon AND of Kaiju No. 6.

Poor Iharu. He thought he was destined to be the best of the best, but once he officially joined the Defense Force he had to face prodigy after prodigy and realize he's not a main character, he's a memorable supporting character. He was even relieved when Ichikawa didn't immediately get control over the No. 6 suit, but he knows how awful that makes him look.

Ichikawa running across that Honju's leg just to freeze it was...spectacular. And he's really bringing everything he can out of the suit, even if that's also jeopardizing his health and destroying his body in the process, but his desire to not lose those he's close to and not fail Kafka again leads to him getting consumed by the suit.

Honestly there's a part of me that really wanted to see Ogata and Toko out in the field, but Iharu showing how far he can take 24% of suit power to parkour his way through ice just to get to Ichikawa so they can finish this together was pretty awesome. He finally brought Ichikawa to his senses and now they're ready to take this Honju down!

Episode 8 (21) "Destiny" - September 6, 2025
Kafka learns to fight without having to rely on Kaiju No. 8's power.

Ok, I hope this is what we'll be seeing this season. Getting back to the character dynamics from season 1 and building up on them.

Iharu and Reno are going to be an important pairing and it ties back to their new Captain and his connection to Shinomiya's mother - his regret fuels his new charge to train these two so they can succeed where he feels he failed. So that's Iharu's thing, he powers up only when he's in the zone. And that turns out to be like the Captain.

Great heart-to-heart between Kafka and Hoshino. But even Hoshino has his limits, lol. Curious how Hoshino is going to level up Kafka beyond his current training regiment.

Whoa, Kafka saw the ghost of one of those laid to rest? Hey, if kaiju exist in this show - ghosts would, too. But what does it mean? They acknowledge Kafka? Is it a harbinger of doom?

lmao, the radio show got meta about them not showing up this season. :D

Ichikawa can't move his body any more, but that's okay! Iharu is there to give him the opening he needs to shoot the Honju's core! And when Iharu is in the zone, he can surpass his limits! Just like Captain Ogata who is the "reasonable and chill but extremely dangerous in battle" captain type!

It's the power of a regular person who, when seeing the walls built in front of him keeping him from getting to the levels of the prodigies who are ahead of him, just punches the wall in front of him! That's a very Takemichi-level answer!

Iharu and Ichikawa's tag-team manages to take down the Honju, and Ogata is left reminiscing about his training days with none other than Hikari Shinomiya, someone who was so dedicated and sincere in her desire to do all that she could to battle Kaiju and save lives that she was willing to use the No. 4 Weapon to do so. But even she had her doubts, which is why she needed someone level-headed and cautious like Ogata to advise her on what to do. To this day he still wonders whether he should have told her not to do it, if she would have still been alive if he hadn't, but seeing the next generation still carrying on her legacy in a way is enough to bring tears to this old mans' eyes.

It's nice to see Mina cares enough about her old subordinates to check in on them.

Honestly I expected Kikoru to have more of a reaction to Reno using the suit of the Kaiju that her mother died fighting against, but Kafka takes it worse because he never wanted Ichikawa on the front lines like that...but Kikoru knows that they all have their own individual fights and will get stronger on their own, and Kafka can't do anything about that. In fact, Kikoru has to become stronger too.

Well, yeah, I guess we're past the point where Kafka can just spout out Kajiu Facts that no one in the Defense Force knows for some reason, so what can he really offer over Kaiju No. 8? Is that really all the value he has now?

Kafka and Hoshina finally reunite! And Hoshina puts the fear of God into him with rubber swords, which is payback for Kafka keeping his secret from him. Not that it means Hoshina isn't also grateful for all he did for them, and in fact knowing Kafka is doomed to stay a Kaiju if he keeps transforming, tells him to just leave the fight to everybody else. Hoshina really is such a caring and considerate vice-captain.

But at least now Kafka is resolved that, whether he likes it or not, he'll use the power of Kaiju No. 8 to protect others no matter the expense to himself. That visual of his half Kaiju face was very effective.

Imagine you're in the Edo era and your only method of fighting Kaiju were spears and swords! I want a prequel story now.

Kafka's gotten by with just being able to punch anything in his path, but is it time for him to finally learn how to actually fight? Granted, on his own he absolutely stands no chance against Hoshina in a fight, but at least Hoshina thinks he's improved a bit on his own terms. But that won't be enough. If Kafka wants to fight as Kaiju No. 8, he needs to master the unarmed martial arts style perfected by Isao, maybe that way he can transform as briefly as possible and incorporate something from Kafka Hibino into Kaiju No. 8!

Dang, I thought Kafka was about to get a Boss Battle with the ghost of an Edo-era Kaiju slayer.
Whoa, Kafka saw the ghost of one of those laid to rest? Hey, if kaiju exist in this show - ghosts would, too. But what does it mean? They acknowledge Kafka? Is it a harbinger of doom?
Optional Boss Fight?
lmao, the radio show got meta about them not showing up this season. :D
Doubling down on them being side characters!

Episode 9 (22) "Omen" - September 13, 2025
A horde of Kaiju appear all over Tokyo at the same time!

Taunting then gone for a month. Looks like a big multi-episode war for the last episodes of the season is on the horizon.

Wow, Isao held out mentally for months. Bigger bummer than him just being assimilated all at once.

That 5th one reminded me of the running man yokai legend. They sorta did homages to him on Dandadan and MHA Vigilantes in recent time.

But what the heck, why does one look like Kikoru's evil twin?!

lmao, Hoshino used the Bruce Lee 1 inch punch on Kafka. :D

Oof, Shinjuku can't catch a break in anime.

Kafka is really taking to all the training Hoshina has drilled into him! And that deserves a reward, like returning his phone back to him via Kikoru!

It's obviously kind of awkward to get back in touch with everybody when you haven't seen them in 2 episodes + an entire season and the last you saw they had all solemnly seen you off on your Kaiju perp walk. That being said, Kafka's still got his best buddy Ichikawa, and even if he accidentally hangs upon him, Ichikawa will still call him back via Iharu's phone to check in on him and make sure he's okay!

Could Kafka have gotten in touch with everybody sooner if he'd actually tried? Did he hold himself back because he was scared how everyone saw him? But in the end, they might be scared of his Kaiju Power, but they still see him as the beloved "Old Man" of the Third Division! And Kafka really needed to see that and let out an ugly cry.

So it seems like Isao's consciousness is still in No. 9, though not for long...especially when he knows that the Kaiju Invasion is about to begin. There's not much he can do other than hope the next generation can win this fight. And he even thinks of Kafka on the same level as Mina and Narumi! And his last thoughts are of Kikoru.

A bunch of huge-level Kaiju appearing at the same time and vanishing as soon as they appeared is pretty concerning...especially when one of them looks like a dark version of kikoru. It really is time for them to scramble every Kaiju weapon/armor and fighter they have.

What better way for Kikoru to avenge her father than by wearing her mothers' Kaiju armor? And battling with Narumi to prove she's ready for it.

At this point it feels like Hoshina most enjoys showing Kafka how far he still has to go in his training.

It's nice to see Kafka and Mina won't go an entire season without seeing each other again, even if it means a slightly awkward lunch. But it's a moment of peace that reminds the two of their dream of a world without Kaiju.

Back when they were kids, Kafka was the most reliable one who lead the other kids and fought back his own fear for their sakes. That meant everything to Mina, and it's why she wants to be able to be there for Kafka now, even as Kafka is still struggling with fully becoming a Kaiju. Mina feels SO much for Kafka but there's only so much she can do.

Sorry pick-up artists, but Dark Kikoru is about to kickoff the Kaiju Invasion!

This week on Hoshi Night Japan: Captain Narumi really needs to be less obvious when he sends in questions for Hasegawa.

Episode 10 (23) "Cataclysms" - September 20, 2025
The battle with No. 9's Kaiju begins in earnest.

No. 9 is trying to take out Japan once and for all it seems, sending unprecedented types and numbers at simultaneous locations all over Japan. But its targets would also cut off Japan from the rest of the world before they could consider asking the international community for help unless someone takes the initiative like Stars in MHA.

The wedding was soul crushing. You just knew a kaiju was going to attack the building. Hope Kafka's old buds are all okay. Chieko was almost a goner but she's probably crippled from that hit...

Kikoru now has the power of her dad and speed of her mother. Epic. Her backup can't even keep up. Reminds me in way of when Noelle in Black Clover finally powered up and transformed into new forms.

Hoshina and No. 10 synchronized by arguing?! lol.

They're not going to let Kafka transform thinking 9 will track him. But... 9 knows what he looks like as a human. Feels like a dumb plan but yeah, thinning the herd first is more logical but No. 9 already threw a curve ball with simultaneous strikes. Who's to say he doesn't have more. They haven't even started fighting the new No. kaiju yet.

They gave Mina an even bigger gun. :D

I hope they're not ending this season on cliffhanger during a big battle and baiting us into thinking someone got killed off.

Okay, Kikoru gets a spiffy new costume and slices up kaiju in this episode.

Episode 11 (24) "The Second Wave" - September 27, 2025 (Season Finale)
The Defense Forces suffer severe damage from a fortitude 9.0 Kaiju that appear at the capital.

All to make them show their aces prematurely and separate all the powerhouses to get killed by Numbers specifically made to counter them. Certainly a strategy. No. 9 is playing for keeps this time around.

So this scenario, Kaiju represents Earth and we're the virus they're trying to wipe out? That's a theory...

Pretty much everyone pushed to the brink until Kafka defies orders and transforms just in time for the season finale next week. Obviously. edit: Damn, this was the season finale.

Okay hear me out, Isn't it kind of crazy how CN never thought about doing a Kids Next Door x Teen Titans OG crossover back in the 2000s? There's five members of Sector V, five titans, and they both have super cool HQs. I'm telling you guys, a TT and KND crossover would've been so epic!
Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
