Otakon...Maybe?

There are always conflicts at stuff like that. Which is one of the reasons I skip the Masquerade/Dance. :P

HaHa!! Really??? Who would have thought anime junkies would be violent? We should have photos of that for our coverage.

Er, so I take it none of you guys watched the masquerade? I was hoping to get some feedback on our skit

Unfortunately didn't run into anybody from here. Ah well, always next and other cons.
They're holding the con even earlier for next year (July 18-20, I think)

So does anyone want to speculate where AN Entertainment is negotiating to get Hare+Guu on television? Here's what I'm thinking:

ImaginAsian Television - I have a feeling it's this one. The show's a comedy, and those aren't as desired by the big networks.

Encore Action - Hare+Guu isn't action..... but then again, neither is EIKEN. Still, all EA has been doing is digging through Media Blasters' back catalog.

G4 - I think these guys are out of the game.

Cartoon Network - Good possibility if Terry Kalagian is willing to take the chance. It would make a good bridge in the primetime hours, and AN Entertainment could benefit from the exposure.

Adult Swim - I can see Kim Manning liking this, but only taking it if Cartoon Network passes on it, ala Bleach. And "intended audience" aside, I don't think AN Entertainment will care. Again, exposure.

Showtime Beyond - I also think they're out of the game.

IFC - So far they've only picked up action based titles made by Gonzo, but maybe they're willing to break the trend, so I'll put them as my second choice.

Did anyone else snag a Gundam Zeta boxset for $40 in the dealers room?

Oh, I saw it. That was...a surprise. I have it already so I didn't get one, but it was an interesting experience to see people getting that for $40 when I got mine for $200...
____

And bleh, typo from before. I was of course talking about Ayako Kawasumi; t'was a mental error to type Yoshiki.

It is true though.

I'm sure the people that are making millions upon millions of dollars off of SEED merchandise would be interested to learn that they were just trying to sell UC merchandise all along.

Well I was kicking myself afterwards for not filming the fight on Saturday.

Yet you have to remember that not everyone who shows up at cons are hardcore fans who can't dance and are easily amused. Heck everyone I went with was in the dance circle on Friday and these guys don't play around when something goes wrong. Yet it's if you go clubbing all of the time in your area because you might find people you've seen before. So I wouldn't worry unless you're in costume.

Although one of the people that a friend brought along we all found annoying. He was just going on an on about EVA and buying all of the EVA merchandise he could. I asked him at one point if he wanted to go to the 7-11 nearby for a drink and he got scared because he didn't want to get killed by the locals. The worst that could possibly happen to him down there is if a crossdresser that isn't from the con approached him. :p

You still could've eBay'ed it.

I took some notes and will be writing up a convention journal (it'll be up on my website on Thursday, I am thinking about posting it here too). Some quick highlights as a teaser...

- Not counting stuff shown at industry panels, in the AMV theaters, or at the Saturday Night fan parodies... I only watched four shows... okay, technically, three shows and the FMA movie premiere (all 'cept for one on Friday). I feel so unfulfilled in that category...
- Speaking of the FMA movie premiere... boo at Otakon for screwing up the printed schedules and everything, which explains why the Friday night premiere was only about 80-85% full. I heard they did make it up and showed an encore Saturday evening, though.
- Got to meet Colleen Clinkenbeard at the FUNi booth... one of my favorite, if not #1 favorite, VAs, and I certainly let her know that too. ;)
- Freebies seemed harder to come by... or maybe I wasn't looking hard enough.
- Three words: 'Naruto VA Panel.' Easily the funnest thing I attended this past weekend. Yuri Lowenthal (Sasuke) is so funny and friendly, and I have quite a bigger appreciation for Kate Higgins (Sakura).

Swag's in the 'bought this month' thread, full con report on Thursday!

You forgot AZN Television. They still air anime.

In Bandai's mind, everything goes back into making more UC stuff, that's why it hasn't gone away and why there's a gazillion sidestories for it. Sure, SEED is a big moneymaker, but it is true that SEED will eventually go away and UC won't.

Nope, not just you. The industry booths were giving away posters & sampler DVDs (I completely missed Geneon's though), Geneon had their Elemental Gelade steel pencil boards at their panel, and ADV gave away some DVDs at their panels. That's about it. Not nearly as much as in other years (I remember '04 my backpack was jam packed with freebie crap, not to mention my Viz tote bags that I got).

Unfortunately, I was not able to go this year I had Band Camp this past weekend, so that sucks, but then again I did not have a ride and I wouldnt be allowed to stay by myself in a hotel anyways...

Yes I did forget them. Probably because there hasn't been much activity from them lately.

I think CN might be the best choice. It would be nice for an anime to be on outside a block. Maybe put it on Fridays with the other CN originals. AS, maybe, but as we saw, people *****ed about Shin-Chan getting a "test run." The only other networks that might air it are ImaginAsian, AZN TV, or the Anime Network. Unless Nickelodeon wants to experiment.

BTW, you probably should have made a separate topic for this. This will get buried with Otakon.

3 out of 5

The con was great. I'm glad I decided not to cosplay, because that would have only added to the insanity that went on and I wouldn't have been able to take it. If you saw a guy with an "Ithaca is MINE" t-shirt on Friday, that was me. I wore a Jim Lee Batman shirt on Saturday, don't think anybody else wore one of those. LOTS of black costume spidey shirts however. I think I saw more of those than Inuyashas.

I tried keeping a running tally of cosplayers with keyblades, but on Saturday afternoon an entire group of Kingdom Hearts players walked by my friends and I while we were playing Whack-A-Catgirl and I lost count.

My friends probably had more fun than me. Matt in particular, who is the singer of his up-and-coming J-rock-influenced band Lunar Cross. Matt went from depressed to shocked to nervous to depressed to pissed, back to nervous and then to excited just on Saturday. His Old School Anime panel died right out of the gate and I had to sit there with my video camera and tape it spiraling down into a quagmire of depression. Others from my group, however, had a lot of success with their Transformers panel, and that was fun to sit through. If any of you guys went to that, thanks for making it awesome. Then later that night Matt and his partner Goki played on the Otacafe stage and totally rocked. They ran out of demo CDs, which was great but sucked at the same time. Matt and I were also trying to shill our latest comic book, and met a lot of cool people in the artist's alley.

Oh, did I mention Matt got clipped by a car while running to get a picture of Hard Gay and himself in his Space Ghost costume? He's fine, he just got bruised. The costume's padding may have saved his life. I think I spent most of Saturday just tending to his needs and making sure he didn't totally lose his mind with everything he had to do.

Yoshiki was unexpectedly awesome. He was totally fine with Matt talking with him on videotape. When the two band members told Yoshiki about Lunar Cross, he literally talked to the two of them until a staff member kicked them out for taking up too much of the guy's time. Wish I was there for that.

The Hirano signing was idiotic, however. What's with the blue ticket thing? Hundreds of people were waiting in line to get into the thing, waited for hours, then at five to the hour a staff guy comes out with a megaphone and says none of them could get in without a blue ticket. That's probably the worst thing I've heard about the con.

AMVs weren't that great. I forgot a pen so I couldn't vote. >_< There were only six or seven that I'd ever want to watch again, which was about on par with last year's, but last year had a few more memorable events such as that Naruto video that was edited to hell and back and "Wizard of Ozaka." The "Peter Rabbit" vid was funny, and awesome since it used not only Washu and Osaka, but Arima from Kare Kano. Word.

The Silent Hill panel was entertaining. The Eileen cosplayer was my fav SH costume from the con. It's too bad she didn't go for the laughs when she won that prize and actually limp her way to the front of the room. That would have been great. She did it halfway back to her spot, though, so gotta give her credit for that.

Guitar Vash and Drunk Vash (who may have been the same person, I don't know) were great. On Friday there was this Vash hanging around with a guitar and he looked darn cool. Then Sunday afternoon, as the con was winding down, I got video of him being drunk, stumbling around and being carried around by his friends. He fell over and started having a fit over somebody blowing bubbles from the floor above him, that was great. :anime:

Of all the people with cat ears on this year, I only saw two or three sexy catgirls. Where the hell were they???

I'll have lots of pictures on my website soon.

Otakon 2006 - :sweat::sweat::sweat: out of :anime::anime::anime::anime::anime:

You forgot the most obvious choice: FUNimation Channel.

Cool. Any hope of uploading the footage?

A fight on Saturday at the dance I guess that explains the ambulance outside the building at 2 am when I was leaving. I'll have a full write up posted to the front page sometime this week, but I personally think it was a very good Otakon overall. An 8/10. Not everythign worked very well, and I heard about some nasty tech isues from tiem to time, but there weren't any major breakdowns considering the fact that there were 25,000+ people in the building and 49,000 baseball fans runing around the area all weekend.

That's odd. I thought the ambulance was for the wife of one of the guests attending Otakon (that's what the person that I roomed with told me).

I saw that ambulance, but the fight was broken up by security and con staff and didn't involve the ambulance. So no real harm done. Now if they had some of the weapons hidden from the dealers room like those slide out batons, there would've been some serious bloodshed. :ack:

keiboopenend400.jpg

Which is why I've always wondered why in the Hell do they sell weapons at every anime con I've been to within the past 2 years. I picked up one of those batons because it was $20 and that's better self protection than a knife due to range and striking power. Plus I could unscrew the bottom and buy longer attachments online so it could be a pocket sized singapore cane.

Other than that I could see some underaged kids who are not very stable get their hands on this stuff and start trouble and anime conventions are full of them. I heard about that whole rape situation last year and another kid being beat down, but having weapons present could make this even worse. Their security still isn't really prepaired for something like that to go down. You can check people with swords and airsoft guns, but almost everything from ninja stars to knives can be hidden easily. They could enforce the rules even further when going to the rave or stop letting these shops sell weapons in the dealers room.

They require ID for any of the dangerous weapons, so I doubt a 14-year-old is going to get his hands on one very easily.

The more I read, the more Otakon sounds like a 50 Cent concert. I guess you have to make sure to cosplay the right color.
