The con was great. I'm glad I decided not to cosplay, because that would have only added to the insanity that went on and I wouldn't have been able to take it. If you saw a guy with an "Ithaca is MINE" t-shirt on Friday, that was me. I wore a Jim Lee Batman shirt on Saturday, don't think anybody else wore one of those. LOTS of black costume spidey shirts however. I think I saw more of those than Inuyashas.
I tried keeping a running tally of cosplayers with keyblades, but on Saturday afternoon an entire group of Kingdom Hearts players walked by my friends and I while we were playing Whack-A-Catgirl and I lost count.
My friends probably had more fun than me. Matt in particular, who is the singer of his up-and-coming J-rock-influenced band Lunar Cross. Matt went from depressed to shocked to nervous to depressed to pissed, back to nervous and then to excited just on Saturday. His Old School Anime panel died right out of the gate and I had to sit there with my video camera and tape it spiraling down into a quagmire of depression. Others from my group, however, had a lot of success with their Transformers panel, and that was fun to sit through. If any of you guys went to that, thanks for making it awesome. Then later that night Matt and his partner Goki played on the Otacafe stage and totally rocked. They ran out of demo CDs, which was great but sucked at the same time. Matt and I were also trying to shill our latest comic book, and met a lot of cool people in the artist's alley.
Oh, did I mention Matt got clipped by a car while running to get a picture of Hard Gay and himself in his Space Ghost costume? He's fine, he just got bruised. The costume's padding may have saved his life. I think I spent most of Saturday just tending to his needs and making sure he didn't totally lose his mind with everything he had to do.
Yoshiki was unexpectedly awesome. He was totally fine with Matt talking with him on videotape. When the two band members told Yoshiki about Lunar Cross, he literally talked to the two of them until a staff member kicked them out for taking up too much of the guy's time. Wish I was there for that.
The Hirano signing was idiotic, however. What's with the blue ticket thing? Hundreds of people were waiting in line to get into the thing, waited for hours, then at five to the hour a staff guy comes out with a megaphone and says none of them could get in without a blue ticket. That's probably the worst thing I've heard about the con.
AMVs weren't that great. I forgot a pen so I couldn't vote. >_< There were only six or seven that I'd ever want to watch again, which was about on par with last year's, but last year had a few more memorable events such as that
Naruto video that was edited to hell and back and "Wizard of Ozaka." The "Peter Rabbit" vid was funny, and awesome since it used not only Washu and Osaka, but Arima from
Kare Kano. Word.
The Silent Hill panel was entertaining. The Eileen cosplayer was my fav SH costume from the con. It's too bad she didn't go for the laughs when she won that prize and actually limp her way to the front of the room. That would have been great. She did it halfway back to her spot, though, so gotta give her credit for that.
Guitar Vash and Drunk Vash (who may have been the same person, I don't know) were great. On Friday there was this Vash hanging around with a guitar and he looked darn cool. Then Sunday afternoon, as the con was winding down, I got video of him being drunk, stumbling around and being carried around by his friends. He fell over and started having a fit over somebody blowing bubbles from the floor above him, that was great.
Of all the people with cat ears on this year, I only saw two or three sexy catgirls. Where the hell were they???
I'll have lots of pictures on my website soon.
