"Stu Go" News And Discussion Thread

It died the same way every DTVA show that's not Big City Greens, Kiff or the Phineas and Ferb revival did. Months of radio silence followed by a quiet announcement of non-renewal.

Quite a shame, considering it was DTVA's best show since Billy Dilley over 7 years prior.

This means it only has 20 half-hours, making it amongst some of the lowest episode count in a Disney Television Animation show.

At least it didn't end on a cliffhanger. The people who made the show were wise to write the S1 finale as if it would be a series finale in the end.

Wow that's a pretty high compliment considering in the last 7 years we've had Ducktales 2017, Big City Greens Amphibia, The Owl House, The Ghost And Molly McGee, Moon Girl And Devil Dinosaur, and Kiff among others which I and many would consider better but to each his own.

It does feel especially skeevy what happened to StuGo and does make me wonder if ANY Kids TV Network now even really cares about you know NEW animated series and just wants to stick to the hits. I mean Nick has been uberly milking Spongebob for the last two decades plus with only a couple of side shows and yeah CN has been in the crapper since Zaslav was fine totally cutting series off due to likely just planning on letting the main network die, but it is weird Disney is doing this since I at least thought they'd care about trying to at least get some more shows going but yeah StuGo was the only really new series they had animation wise as now we're just left with the 2000s/2010s/early 2020's hits still around.

Of the ones listed, I didn't like Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and I liked the rest, but to a lesser extent. It helps that StuGo was the most Disney XD-like cartoon that Disney TVA had made in years (most notably due to its lack of songs, which seemed a little abundant this decade for them).

It is kinda bizarre how many cancellations/infinite hiatuses are going on for Disney Channel, both in the animation and live-action departments).

I thought Disney Channel would have been more stable, compared to Cartoon Network, which can't even have an owner so it can't run, and Nickelodeon who was being run by a company that was busy slashing and burning then selling. (Nickelodeon released more cartoons than Cartoon Network this decade though) and they had around 6 cartoons running at once seems to has just scaled back.

I really enjoyed this show, it was their funniest show (since Hamster and Gretel) . It was nice having a show that felt more classic in style.

It seems they slowed down on toons overall. They were going to release 4 in 2023, (but ended up being 3 since Primos got delayed) then they did a couple in 2024, and this year they axed 3 and one of the three was a new one for this year, and all we got was a new season of a show that ended in 2015. They don't seem to have much new slate coming up.

At the very least, non-preschool cartoons are running a bit dry for Disney Channel

Admittedly, I've only seen a few episodes here and there, so I may not have much to really judge it on, but the series didn't do much for me. It had some funny moments and interesting premises for its episodes that I saw, but it never quite clicked with me. Still, it's a shame that it couldn't even get another season, especially when the creative team weren't told about the fate of their own show for months after it wrapped up. It's sad that Disney Channel has been less willing to give more seasons to other animated shows, especially when they had quite a few good shows airing just a few years ago.

"StuGo Is StuGone: Disney Channel Cancels Series At One Season"

"Can Disney Channel keep anything on the air lately? It doesn’t seem like it. Their latest animated series, StuGo, appeared on the cable network last January and ran through its initial order of forty episodes over the next six months. It was not placed on Disney+ until July, and might’ve benefited from an earlier appearance than that. Too late to know for sure!

StuGo is about six geeky middle schoolers who take a suspiciously all-expenses-paid trip to a remote island, believing it’s an academic summer camp. In reality, they’ve been lured into a trap by the mad scientist Dr. Lullah, who wants their involuntary help with the monsters she’s created. But they don’t seem to mind any of this at all, so maybe it IS voluntary! “What started as three months of learning transforms into an adventure of a lifetime on a tropical island filled with mind-reading manatees, giant fighting fungi and fashion-forward mutants,” reads the official description.

StuGo was created by Ryan Gillis, who based the series on his experiences growing up among the colorful wildlife (and colorful human life) of southern Florida. The show’s contributors included Sunil Hall (Gravity Falls) as co-executive producer and Craig Lewis (Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends) as story editor. Titmouse provided animation duties."

At the very least, non-preschool cartoons are running a bit dry for Disney Channel
For context, here's the non-preschool slate for Disney Channel by DTVA:
  • Phineas & Ferb (set to finish season 5 in January, with a sixth season of 20 half hours in the works)
  • Big City Greens (fifth season of likely 30 half hours in the works)
  • Kiff (wrapped up season 2, with a third season of 30 half hours in the works)
Chibiverse being a weird case where it has a fourth season coming up, but it only premieres new episodes once a month and seasons are only 3-4 episodes per season so not really regular in the same vein as the other three.

Even live action's looking grim too:
  • Wizards Beyond Waverly Place: Season 2 with a shorter 10 episode order finished in October with season 3 depending on Disney Plus viewership (which is a sign the show is over considering how often that is mentioned for shows that didn't get a renewal)
  • Electric Bloom: Season 1 finished in October, no second season renewal
  • Vamprina Teenage Vampire: Finished season 1 in November and already before that finished releasing on Disney Plus in October, no season 2 renewal yet
  • Coven Academy: Only new live action original for Disney Channel set for 2026
  • Eerie Prep: In early development now
Preschool's the only department where originals thrive for now.

I can sense that this has something to do with the search for the next Disney CEO, whether it’ll be either Josh D'Amaro or Dana Walden (or if Disney decides to take the Netflix approach, both!).

Not really. This is all due to the fact that the kids' cable TV model has collapsed. The other two major outlets are also struggling, even though they have their own issues. If there was an entity that could be strong right now, it would be the relatively stable Disney, and it obviously isn't.

Most of the "well advertising" consisted of promos on the channel the show was on, a channel that kids regularly watched, as well as operator-inserted material on the competition. Very little animation on streaming is marketed either, something that is in common with most live-action programs. Kids toy sales have also been worn down to basically the most popular toy-original lines, which obviously flows from the lack of ratings.

Is that Joan Cusack voicing Jessie in that Toy Story Papa John's commercial? If so, it sounds rough. Woundn't surprise me if it wasn't, though.
