The New Toonami Ratings Thread (now with more civility!)

Bad week for One Piece but good for Primal and Bleach.
Bleach doing 150k at 12:30 is really good, especially with Primal only doing 120k again. This is a HORRENDOUS week for anything past Bleach.

Blue Lock lost HALF THE AUDIENCE from Bleach. Then, Tokyo Revengers failed to bounce up like it normally does and only got 60k, which for 1:30 is just terrible. I swear, it’s constantly boom or bust with those two shows. Hopefully at some point they stabilize.

I will admit One Piece got it worst, though. THE RERUNS BEAT IT! One Piece is not too far above the reruns oftentimes, but losing to them is a new low. With how far One Piece’s ratings have fallen, I do wonder if eventually it’s going to become not worth it anymore for them.

Most of their self imposed bans were based on factual information. Sports anime has just never meshed with this audience. Not sure why they thought this would be different, especially when this particular example is so coded for a female audience.

We should have a schedule update incoming tomorrow, I wonder if they will take the chance to swap Blue Lock and Revengers. My initial assumption was Revengers got put later due to content concerns, but we are getting the censorship butchered garbage cut of the show, so that shouldn’t be an issue. After this upcoming update, the schedule is pretty well locked in till summer, so this is their only chance to do it.

9/10 episodes of OP are mind numbingly boring. This is the shortest post time skip arc, and it’s still bogged down with constant padding.

Before it was cancelled in 2017, OP doing worse than reruns was a very regular occurrence. Like, so often it’s shocking it took till 2017 to cancel it. I WISH they would get rid of it, but I feel like Toei is giving them too good a deal for them to ever pull the plug. Not to mention, they will want to stay in Toei’s good graces so that they can secure the latest cashgrab DBZ dumpster fire when it releases.

Great to see you back in the ratings thread, Conttactt!

The weird thing is, Blue Lock seems to be alternating between doing quite well and doing terribly. I'd be less confused if it just always flopped. I do still think it'd be a good idea to put Revengers above Blue Lock, seeing as it's been more consistent overall and always has much better retention. It would make a far superior 1:00 show.

My best guess is people being a little wishy washy with the 3 episode rule. They don’t like it, so they drop it, then they question if they are being unfair and try again, and drop it again. We will see if its downward trend stabilizes.

I’m trying to give these two a fair shake, but they have some plot angles that are really frustrating to get over. For Blue Lock, it sets up the plot as basically “there IS an I in team” and then the very first game they play, it is blatantly obvious playing for yourself is not going to pan out. Not to mention the notion of a single superstar player being able to carry the entire team on the world stage.

We have had some shows on the block over the years with an absolutely rancid plot, yet also weren’t so easy to poke holes in.

The bad news is, we still have 20 some weeks of Blue Lock, so if it’s not vibing, it’s also not going anywhere for awhile. The good news is if it keeps declining, we might be spared S2, which even Blue Lock fans thought was terrible.

I’ve never been so tempted to drop a Toonami show as Blue Lock. The animation is truly awful. I thought you might be exaggerating about the lack of fanservice (by contrast Tokyo Revengers had an almost sex scene last night by contrast with a girl in lingerie on top of our main character totally clothed) but it’s even worse than I imagined, inverted shonen fanservice, in that there’s gratuitous male locker room nudity and female characters are almost nonexistent. Last night a girl showed up, talked to a soccer player for like one minute while taking out the trash, then disappeared. Kinda hilarious. The animation is so limited. Most shots are something like a character just standing totally static thinking. There’s a scene where there is a guy just sitting totally still with no lip flaps in front of some food while ranting about some soccer related subject, eventually we cut to some people standing there thinking with no movement in their facial expressions. Most movements are scrolling across a still shot, or a single character moving in a repetitive loop or making a play with the other characters not reacting. If season two is somehow even worse, I can’t fathom how bad the ratings are going to decline. Five episodes in, I am thinking the famous Char Aznable quote whenever it comes on: I came here to laugh at you. It usually puts me to sleep before Tokyo Revengers, so I can’t help but feel they should swap the two shows. We know they aren’t swapping next week but they should for 3/28, when Dan Da Dan replaces Primal. DDD/TR combo would be peak hour, but I’ll keep having to watch Tokyo Revengers the next morning if it’s on after Blue Lock still. Good thing they count DVR numbers in ratings.

Also 44,000 is a huge drop off for One Piece. It dropped by 2/3 from the prior week?! Admittedly the previous week was a clear outlier because midnight never loses to 2 AM One Piece before in over a dozen years since Toonami hit Adult Swim. These ratings are honestly bizarre… it lost to Rick and Morty the Anime?! when is it One Piece fans claim Toei animation suddenly becomes Kino? Current Zou arc seems a bit better animated than Dressrosa which fumbled even big fights like Luffy vs Doflamingo not looking so fluid.I hope it’s Whole Cake but may very well be Wano… you just have to wait 1000 episodes bro trust me…which I recall being incredibly bloated even in the manga, but at least has some cool big fights. Zou has been a bit slow and light. Remember in early OP when they’d spend two or three episodes in Whiskey Peak or Laboon? Now a short exposition arc lasts like six months, and we have to be glad it’s not three years like Dressrosa.

The animation is so limited.
And think, this is the GOOD season. So if you are noticing those issues now, imagine them turned up to 11 for S2. You know how we at least get the short bursts of soccer gameplay animated properly? Those get mostly swapped to stillframe compilations in S2.

The on air reveal with no schedule posted yet makes me think they are at least considering a bit of a mix up for the mid block shows. First hour is set, but there is still flexibility for the rest

How did Primal do double the rest of the lineup? Massive ratings for a rerun and then Bleach season finale retained none of it. These ratings the past few weeks have been so weird. Besides that, though, this is the most normal week we’ve seen in a while. Blue Lock is back to retaining decently, and Tokyo Revengers and One Piece return to 90k range.

Back in the day ratings were also pretty inconsistant. It's not a big difference now though so I wouldn't call them weird. With low numbers now, a show like One Piece can double it's audience. It would be weird if it got 500k back in the day and next week a million.

probably an unintentional daylight savings time boost and more ppl happened to be watching.

I can’t wait to see what the block got with Rooster Fighter up front!

Usually they've been sharing the ratings on Thursdays. I don't know if today because sometimes they have skipped some weeks. Let's hope by tonight they'll be available.

Last week:

12:00a Rooster Fighter - 187k
12:30a Primal - 164k
1:00a Blue Lock - 127k
1:30a Tokyo Revengers - 111k
2:00a One Piece - 81k
2:30a Dragon Ball Daima - 87k
3:00a Zom 100 - 42k
3:30a Rooster Fighter - 41k

Good start for Rooster Fighter. The rerun helped it get over 200k in total.

I KNEW Rooster Fighter would bring ratings up! These are some very healthy numbers. Hopefully they keep up.

Find it sad that One Piece keeps losing to reruns a lot lately.

Actually it lost to only one rerun last week which is good enough. It would have lost to 2 because there's a big argument about whether Primal is new but I guess it's tecnically new on Toonami so at the end I don't think it counts.

Outside of that brief period where 4Kids reruns were doing well on Saturday night Toonami, which then led to Funimation picking up the license, the anime has always had a tough time on American television. At least the live-action series is doing well for Netflix.

I think it also has to do with the late timeslot. Sometimes with slow arcs people just don't want to stay awake at 2a. But hey, the numbers don't really drop suddenly from 1:30a anymore compared to last year so that's a good sign.

Out of curiosity, what were the lead-in numbers this time around? I want to see how much better Rooster Fighter maintains the audience compared to when Primal was there, cause I've been predicting that that's going to be what makes the difference

Rick & Morty with 258k vs Rooster Fighter 187k.

Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
