Toon Zone Talkback - "The Smurfs" Trailer Online

Lisa: Dad, that was your commercial?

Homer: I don't know!!

Not a smurfs fan, but this makes me want to puke my guts out. Anyone get the feeling that they copied Enchanted with this?

Yeah, when I first saw the trailer I thought of Enchanted right away.

While I'm just a moderate fan of the show, I just don't think this will do it justice. I'll probably see it anyways, but I'll wait for more trailers.

I'm not a fan of the show, but that was just horrible. It almost seems like Hollywood's not even trying anymore. But as long as they get butts in the seats, they don't care, right? *sigh*

Peyo must be doing barrel rolls in his grave right about now.

The trailer didn't leave me with disgust, more apathy. The concept of cartoon characters lost in the real world has been done before, not just in Enchanted but in many other movies, and the trailer didn't excite me about the film. It should be noted, though, I rarely watched the Smurfs TV show as a kid, so that's probably why I'm not crying blasphemy like some of you.

That said, it is distressing how many movies are being made or remade of existing properties nowadays, whether it be old TV series or newspaper strips or comic books or heck, even old MOVIES. True, this has happened in every decade to some extent, but it feels like Hollywood is playing it particularly safe right now, partially because of the economy (after all, why risk money on a new property that might flop?).

I'll give my thoughts later, but.....

Peyo must be doing barrel rolls in his grave right about now.
I don't think he is. This may come as a shock to some people, but according to certain sources, Peyo hated his creation.

Personally I don't like to appeal to dead creators like that, I feel it cheapens their legacy to turn them into cheap appeals to authority fallacies.

Having read many Smurf-related articles, I've never come through anything official regarding this. Source?

Although it's possible (and likely) he didn't like what his creation eventually became when the animated series showed up. A lot of the season 1 episodes were based on his comics and were severely altered, making them poor versions of the originals. Not to mention, several characters created for the cartoon were placed in the comics, probably against his will.

But there's no reason to believe he always disliked his characters, the early comics which were done almost entirely by him were great, not something you'd get from someone who hates the stuff he works on.

Although it should be noted that after Peyo's death, his state was inherited by his son Thierry, who pretty much has to approve everything done with the Smurfs. I have to wonder if he knew the direction this movie was going to take when he approved of this project.

I remember having read an interview with the animator Álvaro Arce where he said that Peyo disliked the Hanna-Barbera cartoon and was about to decline of giving the rights of the Smurfs when he saw the first models sheets and designs, but somehow they did a good "offer" and he accepted.

Oh, if only he could see into the future, he would probably refuse the offer immediately; in a very loud voice, too.

Eh I'm not going to get worked up about it, same with Alvin and the Chipmunks and they are pretty much going for the same audience here. Still looks horrendous though. Along with Hank Azaria's Gargamel costume with him walking around NYC.

That and 'Who Let the Dogs Out' ><

And I'm sure there's one or two other trailer songs I don't want to hear EVER AGAIN!

"I Feel Good" and "Bad to the Bone" need to die horribly.

So does this movie.

I noticed the trailer, is that Neil Patrick Harris (who will star in the movie) introducing the trailer for it at the start while in a comic-con setting?

Yeah, that's him. He's playing Johan in the movie, if I'm not mistaken.
