"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

Colleague,

with an attitude like that no wonder the big wigs give them such a small amount of funds to use and have yet to pay them for their services. anyone with half a brain for business knows personal taste should never factor in on what programs do or do not air. first take into account what the majority of fans have requested, then ask the companies directly if said show performed well on home media or streaming services, then see if said show is within budget.

with selections like tenchi muyo gxp its pretty clear these guys don't know whats best for business unless its shonen type fare.

You're both mistaken.
Cartoon Network spent A LOT of money to acquire Hamtaro and wanted to get their money's worth. So it was given the opening slot on Toonami.
Sailor Moon got bumped to the timeslot right before Toonami.
Hamtaro did NOT do well in the ratings on Toonami and was constantly getting beaten by Sailor Moon, so the network took Sailor Moon off the air (never to return) and replaced it with Ed, Edd, and Eddy.
Even after that, Hamtaro still did not do well on Toonami and was eventually removed from the block and had to air the rest of its new episodes on weekday mornings.

I miss Hamtaro ... (come on Discotek .. or NewVideo .. season sets plz!)

*So I guess with the Viz release of Sailor Moon finally coming out, requests for the show on Toonami (might?) start increasing

This isn't anything new since we've known that whether or not they like a show is a factor for picking a show. I don't know if that's the most important factor or not, but I don't think that's the reason why they don't have a large budget to work with. Besides that, even if their personal tastes didn't factor into the decision, I really can't see them airing Yu-Gi-Oh! DM. It is a heavily edited dub aimed at kids that wouldn't really fit on a block like Toonami that targets teenagers/young adults and I can't really see 4K Media/Konami being okay with one of their shows being on Toonami in the first place.

I think that one of their comments in another Q&A session implied that they regretted getting GXP, which would make sense given that it really didn't fit on the block. That was one of their few poor choices for a show. Even with other choices for shows that I didn't like, such as Sword Art Online or Black Lagoon, I could at least understand why they were chosen and they generally worked for the lineup. I don't think the same could be said for GXP.

I'd certainly like to see that, although the show is already very highly requested. Hopefully into the new year, Toonami will get more of a budget to work with so they can afford that as well as other shows.

I'm beginning to think that you don't watch Toonami. Like, at all. Are you really trying to defend why Yu-Gi-Oh! should be on Toonami on [adult swim]? ADULT SWIM?!?!?! Come on, now.

OK, guys, lets stay on topic.

Anyway, regarding Sailor Moon, I would like to see it. I think the Toonami crew would choose Crystal sooner, however.

Colleague,

its just a matter of time. i'm positive it'll get released by one of the two eventually. i still think the hamataro toonami promo is one of their best. hats off to whoever got peter cullen to say "tonami presents a show about a hamster with mad skillz" lol

nah, the yugioh series has a much larger teen and young adult fanbase than most people think. the majority of the people who watched it when it first aired on kids wb and read it in the pages of north american shonen jump have become teens and young adults. the series is much like ninja turtles and power rangers in that despite being aimed primarily at kids there's a sizable older fanbase who supports it. there's a reason why the distributors of these series release expensive collectors edition boxsets sold exclusively online in addition to the cheap volume releases aimed at kids in brick and mortar stores. i've sold countless yugioh belongings over the years and the majority of people who bought it from me were adults who wanted it for their personal collection rather than parents who were buying it for their kids. koonami would probably be opposed to airing the current yugioh series on tooanmi but they would most definitely be okay with airing the classic series on the block. children aren't the only ones buying all the merch.

yup i am defending a show about teens playing children cards games airing on toonami. Star wars, dbz, naruto bleach, symbiotic titan, thundercats, blue exorcist, one piece igpx, batman, inuyasha, samurai jack, etc. come on my man, let’s not pretend the content is that vastly different and the majority of stuff that has aired on toonami past or present is strictly for older audiences, even in their original uncut format. the same could be said for most western action cartoons and anime. when north american shonen jump was still in physical print there were advertisements for toys, cards, e rated video games, saturday morning cartons and children’s books. they even had even fan art submissions, puzzles and various giveaways for kids. but interestingly enough they also had tons of advertisements for adult swim anime, uncut dvd releases and mature rated manga. the people in charge understand that even stuff aimed at kids has toons of teen and adult consumers. the superhero and action genre usually appeal to people of all ages.

i could see where people were coming from if most toonami shows were along the lines of ghost in the shell or hellsing ultimate with extremely graphic content or mature dialogue but most of these shows aren't like that at all. take away the blood and cursing and most toonami shows skew very young. we’re going to have to agree to disagree because i find the thought of yugioh being too out of place to air on tonami mindboggling. Nobody actually WATCHES Toonami, they all just complain about it.

if you peeked into any of the episode threads you would know some of us do watch toonami every week. it’s just the nature of people on the web to criticize everything. It’s not only easier to do but complaining often results in more discussion than comments of praise usually do.

i can't speak for anyone else but the most of my favorite anime and carttons were series i watched on toonami. alosm i'm not a big sub person so toonami is one of the few places me and other dubbed anime fans can get our weekly fix. i wouldn't be exaggeratting if i said i have the dvds and blurays of the majority of shows that aired on toonami.

anyway its cool that tooami is airing the final act and reruning bleach. i was scared for a second that naruto wuld be the only viz anime on adult swim.

and sentai has aquired the home media rights to big o so they'll mostly work with toonami to air season one so that they can prmote the new dvds/blurays in 2015.

I'm not saying that there isn't a group of older fans for Yu-Gi-Oh! DM. Teenagers/young adults do make up a good portion of the card game sales after all. I just don't think it's large enough to where they would want a heavily edited dub on the lineup. It's like considering that Toonami could air the original Pokemon series because there are older fans who fondly remember that series the most and many of them still enjoy the games. It just doesn't really make much sense to me. I really can't see Konami being okay with Yu-Gi-Oh! DM airing on Toonami. While they recognize that it does have a nostalgic factor for older fans, their primary target is still kids for their dubs, so I can't really see them approving for one of their shows to be aired on a block that clearly is aimed at teenagers/young adults. Not to mention Viacom still has the rights to the first four series, so I don't think that it could air anywhere else besides Nicktoons for the time being anyway.

The entire lineup isn't extremely graphic, but they do air pretty much everything uncut, aside from shortening the openings/endings and maybe adding in more beeps for swear words. Most of the shows currently on the lineup are shonen titles and most of those are aimed at kids in Japan, but it isn't just the blood and cursing that makes them more adult content here. It's also how they tackle concepts and fights differently than what kids shows are allowed to do here because of how Japan has different standards for what can go into a kids show than the U.S. allows. Even if you somehow removed all of the blood out of Attack on Titan or One Piece and didn't change anything else about either show, they still wouldn't be considered kid shows in the U.S.

A show like Yu-Gi-Oh! DM wouldn't fit because it is a heavily edited dub, so airing on a block that airs mostly uncut material wouldn't work and I think it would be pretty jarring. Now, if there was an uncut dub for Yu-Gi-Oh! DM, that would be a different story. I think that uncut Yu-Gi-Oh! DM would fit with the block's lineup, or at least not stand out like a sore thumb nearly as much as the heavily edited dub would, but since that unfortunately does no exist beyond the few uncut DVDs released back in the day, it wouldn't work. I'm fine with agreeing to disagreeing on this, although there are multiple factors preventing Yu-Gi-Oh! DM from airing on the block even if you really want it on the lineup anyway.

Besides that, I think that the last thing Toonami needs is another long running series that locks up a timeslot for another couple of years. It will take them about two years just to get to the new content for DBZ Kai, Shippuden has a long run ahead before it gets to its ending, One Piece has no end in sight and they have Bleach reruns potentially for two years. Although, they could give it a break in favor of something new or something unexpected could happen with the rights like what happened with Naruto and Inuyasha.

Even so, a part of me wouldn't mind Sailor Moon being on the lineup since it hasn't been on the air in years and it would give the new dub exposure, but again, it would lock up a time slot for roughly four years. I would prefer for them to get Crystal instead given it would be more recent. I'm not sure when Viz will dub that series, especially if they provide more episodes for Crystal after its initial twenty-six episode run to cover the rest of the manga. Plus, they might want to finish redubbing the original series first since I imagine that there's more demand for that than for Crystal to get a dub when its still running in Japan.

Besides, Nicktoons still has the rights to Yu-Gi-Oh! anyway, so even if, by an extremely remote chance, Toonami wanted it, they couldn't get it.

To be fair,Nicktoons has got rid of DM from the lineup earlier this year.I do agree with some people,I don't think people will be thrilled if a extremely edited dub like Yugioh DM would end up on Toonami.Besides, you people want to see this on Toonami.http://th07.deviantart.net/fs30/200H/f/2009/237/d/4/Invisible_Guns_by_junkwarrior1711.png

Even if Toonami WAS interested in Yu-Gi-Oh!, do you really think Konami would give a show CLEARLY targeted towards kids to an adult-oriented block? (I apologize if someone has already made this point, but seriously this is ridiculous).

Colleagues,

i disagree. i bet dollars to donuts if the first series was to ever air on toonami it would pull in more viewers than most if not all the shows in the later timeslots. i doubt most viewers care about edits as much as hardcore anime fans do. as long as the show is entertaining enough people couldn’t care less, especially toonami viewers who watched it during the kids wb days. the people who abhor edited anime are the vocal minority.

i respectfully disagree again. much of the depictions of violence and heavy subject matter tackled in current toonami anime are no different from content kids have seen in various novels comics and blockbuster movies aimed at general audiences. if anything, the content in anime is less serious and realistic to audiences due to its tendency to make nearly every moment of drama or violence surreal and over-the-top instead of subtle. most animation is considered kids shows in the west and much of the world. the majority of people i talk to who aren't into anime believe they're all along the lines of pokemon or dbz in terms of content and many aren't even aware they originated from a different country. when people think of adult oriented cartoons they think of primetime comedy related fare such as family guy or south park. anime and manga are essentially considered superhero cartoons and comics in most eyes. and to use the north american shone jump example again, despite clearly being targeted towards kids there were several advertisements and previews of mature rated anime and manga even ecchi stuff was promoted like it was no big deal. drawn content is often viewed as less offensive than the kind with actual people.

furthermore, people often forget just how lax cartoon network was it came to content in the middle years of the 2000s. stuff like kenshin yu yu haksuho, db, naruto weren't that drastically different from their uncut counterparts and animated movies were left unaltered. .hack was aired uncut despite having lots of fanservice and a twinncest subtext, albeit during late night and with no advertising aside from some bumpers. even the first two seasons of dbz were uncut leaving the swearing, nudity, gore, dismemberment, middle fingers and multiple onscreen killings intact. The standars and practices group overseeing cartoon network s content or at least some of them, seemed perfectly fine with children watching content that would otherwise get a tv-14 or tv-ma rating if done in live action format. had things not changed so drastically over the years i could see attack on titan having a possibility of airing on the channel.

A show like Yu-Gi-Oh! DM wouldn't fit because it is a heavily edited so airing on a block that airs mostly uncut material wouldn't work and I think it would be pretty jarring. Now, if there was an uncut dub for Yu-Gi-Oh! DM, that would be a different story. I think that uncut Yu-Gi-Oh! uncut doesn't matter to me. the 4kids yugioh dub is one of my all time favorites. people often make fun of it but all the voice actors did a fantastic job in my eyes and i wasn't bothered by 4kids changes in the slightest. i love the original manga but the anime made several moments 10x cooler. it would be perfect in one of the later timeslots imo.

Even if Toonami WAS interested in Yu-Gi-Oh!, do you really think Konami would give a show CLEARLY targeted towards kids to an adult-oriented block? (I apologize if someone has already made this point, but seriously this is ridiculous).

you mean the place that aired cartoons of batman and star wars, two successful franchises that millions of kids across the world love. the very place that was advertised right next to all their yugioh and non-yugioh related products in thousands upon thousands of magazines. the same place that was the home to countless jump square and shonen jump series that yugioh shared faced time with on countless covers. yup, there's no way koonami would agree.

when the average jane and joe thinks of adult oriented programming they think of stuff like hbo, late night talk shows or primetime basic cable tv series. superhero cartoons and teenagers with bright colored hair battling freaks and monsters is only adult oriented material in the minds of geeks. and i say that as someone who is about as geeky as it gets.

Then what if the non-Yugioh fans who watch Toonami do not want to see a heavily edited dub like Yugioh DM..I really doubt it is going to pull in more views than the other shows.Light Lucario did say that 4K Media does know how much the older fanbase want a uncut Yugioh, that is why there is legal subs for the spinoff series with the exception of GX.However, their target audience is still kids,so I don't know how 4K Media will put one of their shows on a block that is aimed towards teens and adults.Uncut DM could actually fit the block since it has action and dark elements that could fit Toonami. It does not exist however. All there is the heavily edited dub.Something even tells me you never watch Toonami.
I have a huge feeling that this is going to become a huge argument.

Let's just drop the conversation here. It's pretty pointless anyway because there's no way Yu-Gi-Oh! DM is going to air on the block. Even if their personal taste wasn't a factor, there are still factors that prevent it from airing on the block, such as Nicktoons having the cable rights and Konami most likely not wanting one of their shows aimed at children at an adult targeted block. Both Batman and Star Wars have more adult fans than I think Yu-Gi-Oh! DM has, so it wasn't as much of an issue for those shows to be on the block, while the most acknowledgement older fans in the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise has gotten is getting some official subs for some of the spin-off series.

Even if you think it would work on the block, there's really no point in discussing it when it's absolutely not going to happen and there are other topics we can discuss here about the block and about shows that actually have a chance to air on the lineup. So from this point forward, let's not bring up Yu-Gi-Oh! DM in relations to the block. It's not going to go anywhere and it ultimately feels pointless to argue in favor of a show that they've already confirmed multiple times that would never air on the block.

Okay, this has gone on long enough. I usually don't like intervening in free speech here, especially since this is the most lax forum on TZ, but this has reached the breaking point.

STOP ASKING FOR YU-GI-OH! TOONAMI WILL NEVER, EVER PICK THIS UP. PERIOD.

Stop sticking to these vague, weak justifications for trying to put this on Adult Swim. This show is edited FOR KIDS. This show is made FOR KIDS. This show is broadcast FOR KIDS. No matter how much you try to spin this ridiculous narrative, this show is not fitting for Adult Swim.

Now please stop derailing the thread and stick to Toonami news. I'm sick of this.

I already asked for the conversation to be dropped, so I'm not sure if it was really necessary for provide that large font warning to drop it, although the colored font helps to make the warning stand out more than in my two paragraph response. In any case, I agree that it's pointless to keep talking about a show that has no chance to air on Toonami and wouldn't fit in the slightest, so it's best to drop it completely.

I should have never ask DeMarco that question on Reddit.I am so sorry people because that question just started that thing.

Hey you guys begged for three other kids shows that air at similar timeslots. You kinda deserve this.

Okay, so I found out that Sailor Moon had meet and greets at Universal Studios back in May. It would have been so cool if we had that at the turn of the century. I have gotten hugs from a Sailor Moon and a Sailor Mars at a local con back in the 2010s and spent under $100 doing it, so I don't know if this is worth the splurge but I can see that these affluent geeky people are enjoying their Sailor Moon hugs.
