"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

Which version of One Piece. The 4Kids of the Funimation version?

Did you seriously just ask that...

Anyways this is the most exciting thing that's happened to me since Toonami officially came back. I think things are finally starting to heat up around here again!

I wish Toonami had a hour a night (in addition to their Saturday night run) so they could show series with 400+ episodes at a faster pace.

Do you even have to ask? Toei and FUNi would never have Toonami air the 4kids dub ever again.

Whoa, Rebuild of Evangelion AND One Piece? This is the best news for Toonami since the block's return.

The new TOM looks like a sufficiently awesome replacement, obviously infinitely better than TOM 4 ever was, and the new Absolution looks like it will get a relatively similar reaction from me once I see some clearer pictures. Obviously they're making sure to keep it all feeling as cool as ever now, and the fact that this means they must be doing well enough to get more budget than they were getting early on is very good news.

Given how many false starts One Piece has had on American TV, I hope that they choose a later arc to start from. I guess it would be alright if they picked up where Toonami last left off, but Water Seven seems like the best starting point to me, since that's where the series transitions to widescreen. Not to mention that the rest of Skypiea is pretty inconsequential as far as canon arcs in that show go.

I fear they'll still start from the very beginning, for the sake of introducing the show to new viewers. I'm just glad to have One Piece coming back to TV, though at the same time I'd still prefer they start at say Season 4. At a likely rate of only 1 episode per week, it would take years to catch up to where Toonami last left off if they did start from episode 1.

I'm really hoping they start with the New World storyline. It's a good jumping-on point and there's enough episodes where it's behind, but not vastly behind. Funi can make a summary special to air before it to explain everything and it's all set.

Depending on if they decide to broadcast it in the summer or maybe fall vs replacing GXP when it ends means they can create a buffer for the dubs considering a production rate of about 1 episode per week.

That would require FUNi skipping ahead from where they are currently dubbing, which I really don't see happening. They only have up to Season 5 licensed, as far as dubbing goes.

Which may be the reasoning behind no date given yet. They cleared the rights, but need time to ramp up production.

Okay someone else on another board said the 4Kids which I thought was unsual.

This leaves me conflicted. On one hand it's a good pick up and One Piece is a good show. On the other, it's One Piece and it's neverending. It's just another long running show that's going to take up space. And it's so dang slow for once a week thing. I just think we could get shorter series coughTigerandBunnycough at least until Bleach is done.

This is seriously awesome news. I wasn't expecting One Piece to join the lineup until either the block got an expansion or Bleach ended. That's just so cool and definitely a good way of getting more ratings. Starting off where it left off when it aired on the original Toonami would be good since even without starting at the beginning for the general audience, I'm sure that a lot of One Piece fans would tune it and that would give it pretty solid ratings over time. I would be kind of disappointed if they couldn't expand the block by the time it airs. Having three long running shonen series taking up three slots seems like a bit much, even though Bleach will be over by sometime next year, so an extra hour would be helpful. They clearly have more of a budget now, so hopefully that can be possible at some point as well. At least this time, this is a shonen series that I actually like. Bleach bores me and I couldn't care less about Naruto. I don't mind having so many shonen shows on the lineup since they are popular and can give the block it needs to survive and get new shows.

I'm also quite glad that they said that the new Sailor Moon series is a possibility and that they're looking into it. While we don't know much about the series, although I'm still sure it would be a more faithful adaptation of the manga storyline, it would be a good fit for Toonami as it would provide some nostalgic material, in a sense, while providing something brand new at the same time. I'd love to see it air on Toonami in the future.

I'm surprised that they're having a movie night next week. That's pretty cool. I've never actually seen anything of Evangelion. I've read about it and watched some reviews of it, but never saw the series or any of the movies. I might check it out for the heck of it. The new TOM design looks pretty cool too. It's all really great news for the block and I'm quite happy to hear about it.

Toonami's official answer on which episode One Piece would be starting with is too early to say. Therefore, if you really want to see One Piece start off closer to where Toonami originally left off, I would suggest to respectfully request it to the Toonami crew. If they get enough requests, they may actually consider it.

Does anyone have any idea of when they will begin using Tom 5? Or the new absolution

The Toonami crew said around April, so rather soonish. It will be a complete rebrand.

Yes, yes, yessss! This is awesome news!

-One Piece is in! I agree with GWOtaku, hopefully they will start at Skypiea since there is so much recap afterwards. It helps that Funimation's One Piece Official provides legal viewing of 1-205 for any viewer who wants to know about the beginning.

-New Tom!? Already? Awesome! I really like the design of him and the Absolution.

Going by this, I'm assuming the Toonami upgrade will come with a new hour slot(11pm) and include One Piece(said to possibly NOT be Tenchi GXP's replacement).

As a few have already said, I'm conflicted by the news coming out from Momocon. I understand the desire to air One Piece, as it's been requested so much, but the idea of reairing another long series that was dopped by Toonami in the past bugs me. With them only airing once a week, what are the chances we'll EVER see the shows completely aired? I'd rather see shorter, more recent series being acquired.

Great that they're showing an Eva movie, but anyone ask them if a movie night will be a regular thing, like once a month or each quarter or so? If so, a LOT of different stuff could get aired.

2.In the next couple of months we will premiere an online comic that will tell the story of How TOM 3 became TOM 4, how TOM 4 became TOM 3.5, where Sara and the Clydes are, and how we got TOM 5 and the new Absolution. We’ll offer more details on that when we have them.

This will be an interesting read.
