"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

But Kai's just a reedit of a show from 1989. No matter what Toei does, its still going to look 25+ years old.

I don't think it looks 25 years old. It's far from the best animation of its time but it holds up fine.

I agree, Dragon Ball Z holds up surprisingly well.

Anyway, I'd be happy with Sailor Moon. I'd totally watch.

I love Death Note, but I've already seen it like twice.

Death Note? Not a bad show, but also not quite a fitting choice for an action block...

Why aren't they looking into Durarara!! instead? It actually has action and a second season is on the way.

I would love durarara!! On toonami I think it would be a good fit

I knew it. That goes way out on the extreme with its nudity, and I doubt aniplex or toonami would want to pony up money for digital edits.

Is using the blurring tool really that hard? They did it for Tenchi on April Fool's Day, and they'll likely end up doing it for Black Lagoon.

I too am surprised they're looking into Sailor Moon, since I didn't think they had any interest in female-targeted shows. That said, my money's on Crystal due to the old series predating Cowboy Bebop by six years. It would take awhile due to it being biweekly, but I'm sure it'll happen in time.

That said, I can see them airing the old Sailor Moon movies if/when they get redubbed. Cooler's Revenge and Akira are also older than Bebop, and yet they aired.

I'm sure that the Sailor Moon movies will get redubbed. It would seem odd to leave anything of the original series undubbed. I've only see the R movie, but I liked it and airing the movies would be a nice way to showcase Sailor Moon on the block before getting Crystal.

Damn. No love for Fairy Tail, huh? I feel bad for its fans. Lmao. Although honestly.... I woulda preffered it over DBZKai. Enough with DBZ already, geez
...

The Madoka movies are now being dubbed. Possible movie nights?

I wouldn't mind seeing the Madoka movies on the block. If they aren't going to air the series, then the movies could be a good second choice. Although, I've only seen Rebellion, so I don't know how the other movies recapping the events of the series fair up.

Honestly I think they're looking into the original. We all know it will take at least a year for Crystal to be dubbed. And considering Kai is basically the 1989 show just re-edited, I can see the new Viz dub of Sailor Moon upon the horizon (I mean, the new dub is essentially in the same boat as Kai: both shows are the same show as before, but both are different versions of each show, with Kai being re-edited, and Sailor Moon being a new dub).

It'd be cool if they aired the Sailor Stars arc, which, as far as I know, has never been broadcast in the U.S.

I'd rather have the series and then Rebellion, but I guess the movies could work.

I'd prefer the series myself since it is quite good, while I have mixed feelings about Rebellion. Although, I've never seen Madoka dubbed. The movies could be a nice second choice if they aren't interested in airing the series for whatever reason.

I kind of had a feeling DBZ would be back in some way shape or form after they suddenly decided to air Cooler's Revenge. Especially with the promo tagline, "DBZ...back where it belongs."

I love Fairy Tail, so I am all for it joining the lineup, but I ain't losing sleep over it either. I think we would have fun talkback threads, but I got the DVDs, I have seen every episode, I don't need it on Toonami. If it is not on Toonami, it is their lose, not mine.

I still don't think so. They admitted on their Tumblr that they have no interest in airing anything older than Cowboy Bebop. The original Sailor Moon aired in 1992, six years before Cowboy Bebop. Crystal will take some time, but it's newer so it's more likely to air.

That's wrong. Dragon Ball Z Kai is considered a different show, animated differently, that aired in 2009. This new Sailor Moon dub is just a redub of the 1992 series. I mean, if there was a Sailor Moon Kai in Japan they might go for that, or if someone else tried dubbing the original Dragon Ball Z I doubt they'd go for that. Unless they decide to go back on what they said on their Tumblr, I just can't see them airing anything from the original Sailor Moon series, movies aside.

Though on the subject of movies... I know I've been asking about the recent DC animated movies, but I wonder; think there's any chance of them airing the old DCAU movies? Like Batman: Mask of the Phantasm? Being older means they probably won't cost as much as the recent ones, as well as the fact that they don't seem to mind airing movies older than Bebop (such as Akira and Cooler's Revenge), so what are the odds of this happening?

Airing the uncut version of Return of the Joker would be really cool too. I could see them maybe looking into that possibility, especially for some of the more recent DC movies, but I don't know if it would be difficult for them to get the rights to air those movies. Hopefully, Beware the Batman performing well on the block could open the doors to that possibility of getting DC movies.

Hmm, I wasn't aware DBZ Kai was animated differently. From what I gathered, it just seemed like the original show chopped together with new voices and new music and less episodes. Guess that goes to show I have a lot to learn about anime! :p

Eh.... that's a bit of an exaggeration. Kai is really just a retouched edited DBZ that replaces music, cuts the fat and updates the visuals somewhat. Its not like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood that truly reanimates the series.

KAI is a glorified HD makeover. That being said, while it still looks dated.... its treated as a different show than DBZ, and thus.... it technically is newer than Bebop. Arent loopholes wonderful? Lol
