"Toonami" News & Discussion Thread

They likely have to make the trailer look like a Superman action show because of the Toonami demo but don't worry, the melodrama and romcom elements will still be on equal footing with the action. Sure you could argue MY implies Lois' POV, but it's very much Lois and Jimmy's adventures with Superman with any given episode shifting either into the lead role and the others as supporting cast. This show has given Jimmy the most characterization and arcs than any previous animated series or movie and it's every much his show as it is Lois or Superman's. And now Supergirl is in the mix, too.

MY Adventures WITH Superman. Lois is the main character, and Superman is the supporting cast.

When it was meant for CN, this was supposed to be a more romcom Lois/Clark thing over a Superman beats up bad guys thing. It was aiming at a more female audience.

Now it comes off as your typical Superman cartoon, where him and his conflicts are the main focus, and the lingering romcom elements will be tucked off to the side.

Im not saying this is a bad thing, it makes sense for them to repurpose the show to its new audience, I’m just saying we can see the transition in real time.
I think that might be taking the title of the show a bit too literally. Lois, Clark and Jimmy are the main leads. I certainly wouldn't call Superman a supporting character in his own show. Clark dealing with his powers, his identity as both himself and Superman and his connection to Krypton were all major storylines in the first two seasons. They did focus on the romance between Lois and Clark right off the bat, but there were still plenty of Superman action too. It wasn't just a romcom.

I've only seen the trailer a couple of times, but I don't think it comes off as your typical Superman cartoon, mainly because I don't think we really have a lot of those to begin with. Superman doesn't have nearly as many animated series as Batman does, so I don't know what typical Superman cartoon would really be. Besides that, a trailer hyping up the new season with action scenes sounds pretty normal to me. That doesn't necessarily mean that there won't be a shift or change with this season. The series was originally ordered for Cartoon Network, but the third season was made specifically for Adult Swim. That could impact its tone or the storyline, but it's a bit too early to say for sure just yet and making that assumption from a trailer seems like a bit much to me. If the information about Clark wanting to settle down with Lois and Lois being worried that settling down will make her lose her reporter edge is any indication, the romance isn't going to be just on the sideline. If it's anything like the past two seasons, the Superman action and conflicts will impact the romance for some good old fashion drama.

That trailer makes it seem like MAWS is abandoning the relationship focus and becoming Superman shonen. If so then that's a shame. It'll probably still be decent but I really liked the unique direction they went with it originally.

I am still disappointed about how the next season will turn out. Robin (or Nightwing) is still not confirmed to return, and there is (get used to it) lack of Thursday/Friday premieres.

It's not abandoning that.

... what show are you talking about?

My Adventures With Superman. I was expecting the likes of Robin (or Nightwing) to appear since Dick Grayson started as one of Superman's sidekicks in the comics.

Are you... are you messing with me? He started out and was always Batman's sidekick but sure Robin and Superman, I'm pretty sure they teamed up on occasion in the Silver Age World's Finest comics but he was never Superman's sidekick.

Online schedule is showing extended blank time for 6/6, so the prediction of a full Rooster Fighter series marathon may be correct.

Update - the schedule for 6/6 is blanked out for 11pm till 5am. The two episodes of R&M before Toonami, and the two episodes of American Dad after Toonami have been omitted for the night. That’s 4 slots, + the 8 the block normally occupies, equals 12 slots, exactly how many Rooster Fighter needs for a full run.

The 5am hour continues to air the non Toonami run of MAWS, to keep it on track with ending that night.

I'm guessing the chances are higher this will be the dub, right? Low chance it's a marathon of the sub version?

Well, the English and Spanish dubs are broadcast simultaneously. Just turn on SAP for the Spanish dub. Like Naruto, Zom 100 and Yashahime, Rooster Fighter should have a Spanish dub available.

It's really up to Viz. It's their original, not really Toonami's.

Well, the dub has been airing a LOT, twice on Saturday, Sunday, and one other time during the week. The sub has not aired anywhere on AS yet, so this might be its moment.

Obviously, ratings for 12 consecutive subbed slots is not gonna be spectacular, but probably not all that much worse for a dub run that’s already overexposed.

Ultimately the choice falls to Viz, it’s their show, and they would need to make the sub available to AS to do this. AS may be willing to eat dirt on a night worth of ratings if it means strengthening their relationship with Viz.

5/19: ^Just to be clear, on streaming. Not on Toonami.

5/21: Rooster Fighter episode 11 clip.

Any new guesses what will replace Dan Da Dan? Odds on a Viz, Kodansha, or Toho backed show?

I'll put in totally random, will be wrong , but guessing is always fun with Kaiju No. 8, because uh why not?

That would be a good get. Some of us may be pretty close to the lead character's age, lol.

I was thinking Fire Force season 3. Maybe even Gachiakuta - it is almost a year since its premiere. Perhaps the rest of Blue Exorcist, the Blue Night saga. Those are my top 3 guesses.

The ones I don't think will ever continue their airings are Demon Slayer, Dr. Stone, Mob Psycho 100, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, MHA, and Gridman.

But I suspect after Dan Da Dan, there will be 1 or 2 marathons, pushing a premiere of its replacement to July 4 (i.e. a My Adventures with Superman premiere then 6 Dan Da Dan episodes for the rest of the night).

Still waiting for 86 Eighty-Six or Yaiba: Samurai Legend to hit Toonami.

Rooster Fighter marathon on 6/6.
So I put the obvious pieces together today. Why hasn’t the sub aired? It’s not a Toonami original. The sub for originals aired because they owned them and had free access. The RF sub would be no different than the Dan Da Dan sub for example, it would be an entirely different license and expense.

Anyway, is this the longest stretch of time that Toonami has gone without interruption? Marathon delays are a lot less frustrating when they are a once in 6 month thing, rather than every 4-5 weeks. I’m actually looking forward to a night off.

I think the most obvious pick would be Blue Exorcist S5. Get that wrapped up before the year ends.

For a left field pick, I think we should keep our eyes on Tougen Anki. It’s a shonen series, but it has a similar distribution model to Zom and Dan Da Dan, where its distributor, Remow, has blasted the show out to anyone that will take it. Crunchyroll, Amazon Prime, and Netflix all have it, so there is no exclusivity. It’s 24 episodes, with another season on the way.

If whoever is running the block now is on the hunt, this feels like something they are gonna stumble on since it doesn’t have Crunchyroll’s claws into it.
