I don't know how well Tenchi GXP will do though.
If you like shapely animated women, then you'll like GXP. It's easily the most fan-service show TOONAMI has aired to date & if it does well I think it could pave the way for some more recent fan-service harem anime's. I think it was a smart choice because while they are taken a risk on a harem anime there is the nostalgic value of anything Tenchi Muyo. We saw evidence of that value on TOONAMI classic night back in Apr. Do you remember how the princess & the ghost were the main rivals in the series CN aired? Well Kiriko & Amane are the main rivals in GXP. Kiriko is a tall, buxomy 33yr old with long dark hair & Amane is a shorter, buxomy 20yr old with short blonde hair. Amane like Ryoko is the super-aggresive type & Kiriko is somewhat shy. Remember the dark-skinned blue-eyed blonde? She's in it as well but she's much more reserved & mature now.

GXP comes across as a $ grab to me. There's a bathing scene in every vol of 4 ep, & there's even some scenes where the GXP girls & the girls from Tenchi Muyo get together. There's even a buxomy furry Dr woman in it as well as the typical MOE chars. I think if it does well we could see something like Sekerei in the future.

I'm not into fan-service shows and that will probably be a major turn-off for me with GXP, especially when I find blatant fan-service annoying most of the time. I'm not really familiar with any of the characters from the Tenchi series. I remember seeing them in promos and when I flipped through the channel, but I don't know anything about them. I'd also prefer for Toonami to not air even more fan-service shows in the future. I'd rather see some decent action series, or at least shows that don't completely rely on the fan-service to get people's attention.

I'm with Light Lucario. I generally dislike fan-service shows.

Now, if a show has fan-service, but also a really good plot with good action (A Certain Magical Index), than I'm okay with it.

To each his own when it comes to liking hot chicks in anime giving fan-service, but it's not simply to get people's attention in GXP. The most notable aspect of DeMarco's choice of GXP is that he's picking an anime that is first & foremost a rom-com above anything else. It's got quite a bit of action & some decent drama to heighten those moments but whether someone likes it or not is going to depend mostly on whether the rom-com aspect develops likeable characters like Tenchi Muyo did. GXP is without a doubt a character driven show & if Bleach fans don't find these chars likeable early on it probably will fail. It's definitely an experimental choice for TOONAMI.

I think that you misread my post. I wasn't saying that they're using fanservice to get attention in GXP. I was saying that regarding shows like Sekerei or pretty much every female-heavy fighting series I've heard about where the fanservice is the bread and butter of the show, rather than the storyline or character development. I agree that it's an experimental choice for Toonami, but I'm still not sure how well it will do. It will probably do better than Casshern Sins, especially with coming on right after Bleach, but I don't know how much I'll like this series. I'll see what kind of first impression it leaves on me when I watch it tonight.

There is a good clip of action as well, and they can trade on Toonami nostalgia as well, so it's not the riskiest move they could make, but it's definitely a great way of testing multiple fronts as once. I really think this could open the door for War on Geminar at a minimum, which FUNi is much more likely to need to get exposure (GXP better have paid itself by this point - it's almost been a decade or two,) and which is more more character and story oriented than even the average Tenchi show. It could also be a draw on trying something more comedically driven. I don't think it'll open the door for fanservice though, as some worry.

Not to say I'm all up ons low-brow entertainment for Toonami but if the goal is to entertain adult males then fanservice makes a lot of sense. That's almost assured to get better ratings.

That's a Tenchi Muyo series as well. GXP's premiere definitely had it's work cut out for it as 007 Skyfall ruled the Sat BO. It was up 30% over the premiere of Ralph & 007 is much more likely to draw a LN crowd. At least SNL was down some with Hathaway & Rhianna. Football doesn't fig as much of a threat either as UCLA had it's way with Wash St in the 1st half. Only the faithful tuned in for the rest of that game. DeMarco will no doubt be looking at GXP's drop from Bleach & anything less than 20% will be considered good. S7 typically lost more than that.

If DeMarco has opened the fan-service window some to get some air into the block then maybe HS of the Dead is on his mind in time for the return of Walking Dead on AMC next spring.

SNL was up 11% vs last yr w a 5.0 HH & 2.6 18-49.

Ratings - "Arrow" Still a Straight Shooter for The CW | TheFutonCritic.com Let's not forget that the sobr ratings are L+SD & the ratings that pay the TOONAMI bills are C3. I believe the gap between program & commercial ratings for TOONAMI is much lower than that of the avg for [as] because of 1) lack of competitive programming for those slots, 2) variable break time. TOONAMI is really hard to narrow down for any show as to when the mid break will occur. If Supernatural see gains of 46% in 18-34 for it's L7 ratings then I think TOONAMI might see some similar to that for C3.

I bring this up because the sponsorship for TOONAMI has never looked stronger for even the 4am slot. The days of Life Alert & other toll-free # ads seem long gone now.

Because that's Mihoshi's mom Mitoto, not Mihoshi.
That explains a lot since this is a parallel series to Tenchi Muyo.

Sunday Cable Ratings: ‘Walking Dead’ Easily Wins Night, + ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’, ‘Breaking Amish’, ‘Talking Dead’, ‘Long Island Medium’ & More - Ratings | TVbytheNumbers The first Sat in NOV, the LN football game on ESPN2 avg'd 443k 18-49 & it ran from 10:30 past 1:30a. I believe all TOONAMI shows in that time span beat that because Sins got a solid lift in it's series finale. That 450k range = 0.4R for 18-49 so that gives a nice comparison for what TOONAMI might be doing in that range. That helps explain the solid sponsorship the block is getting.

Further down there is my favorite comparison, WWE A.M Raw (2am 274k or 0.13R 18-49) & I think TOONAMI thoroughly kicked it's butt.

MarvelUniverse, B10:Omni, SW:CW, TMNT, & other Nick premieres are also listed there for 18-49 only. Winx beats Power Rangers but that's probably more of a Sat vs Sun thing.

If the goal is to entertain adult males then fanservice makes sense.
The goal of the 12:30am show should be to first retain at least 3/4ths of the Bleach viewers & then hope for at least 10-15% non-Bleach viewers so the drop is in the 10-15% range each week. I don't think GXP did that. Making the lead a "hexed" char (i.e., Scarlet Witch where probabilities are reversed) is a welcome change to the block, but where was the action? How can you open a new series for TOONAMI without major action? If DeMarco doesn't want this to fail he has to put together an action-packed promo for GXP to air during Bleach asap. I don't think the Tenchi fan base is either relevant or large enough to compensate for a lack of action.

Sunday Cable Ratings: ‘Walking Dead’ Wins Night, ‘Breaking Amish’, ‘Dexter’, ‘Homeland’, ‘Boardwalk Empire’, ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’ & More - Ratings | TVbytheNumbers Rick's rampage pushed Walking Dead over 10m again & a 5.6 18-49. That slaughtered the rest of cable & proved again that long-winded stories are over-rated. A show just needs strong emotion driving the action which helps explain why Arrow is the top draw on the CW right now. A 5.6 for TWD means Talking Dead beat FG & this time it wasn't close. TD drew 1.1 18-49 to FG's 0.7. With FG falling below 2m, nothing else [as] made the top 100 25-54. After TD, the 3rd encore of TWD likely beat [as] w a 0.6 18-49. If that wasn't bad enough, an encore of Breaking Amish on TLC beat FG w a 0.8 18-49 as well.

Friday Cable Ratings: ‘Gold Rush’ Wins Night, ‘Jungle Gold’, ‘WWE Smackdown’, ‘Haven’, ‘Jessie’ ‘Ghost Adventures’, & More - Ratings | TVbytheNumbers FG fell below 2.2m on Fri which led to a 1.5 RC & a 0.65 18-49. Blame 007 SkyFall & Duck Dynasty. SyFy's Haven lost 0.2 from Smackdown which I'd say is ok. Both are down substantially from Haven's season premiere.

This might put Bleach's total viewers in perspective. FX's 10p Ult Fighter Live drew 921k, but 674k were 18-49. That was good for a 0.5R. Is Bleach routinely drawning a 0.5-0.7 in 18-49? Maybe. You need less viewers to pull a higher rating in this demog as the night where's on.

I think you can kiss Motorcity & Tron:Uprising goodbye after this season. DXD stopped reporting their premiere's. The last report had Motorcity at 338k tv's.

Adult Swim Weekly Ratings Scorecard | TV Media Insights – TVMI – TV Ratings – Network TV Show Reviews

Not a great week. Bleach is about 100,000 down from last week, but on the plus side it's comparatively stronger compared to the rest of AS's line-up at #75 as opposed to #88 (the combination of You're Whole, Tim and Eric, and Assy McGee seems to be bleeding viewers on weekdays). Tenchi GXP debuts with 806,000 viewers, less than Casshern last week. Considering how cheap the show must have been it's not a bad debut but Toonami needs to get a good "love stinks"-style promo for it soon if they want it to do better. And speaking of shows that deserve their own promos, Samurai 7 lost over 200,000 viewers as a result of its timeslot change. Eureka 7 lost a lot as well, but being an already weaker-performing show in essentially reruns and being moved to a very late slot, that's expected. Thundercats is probably the biggest winner for Toonami this week, actually beating Samurai 7. And Inu-Yasha saw a bit of a bump in the last hour.

Here are the Toonami ratings only:

12:00 AM - Bleach - 1,027,000 viewers
12:30 AM - Tenchi Muyo! GXP - 806,000 viewers
1:00 AM - Samurai 7 - 674,000 viewers
1:30 AM - Thundercats - 688,000 viewers
2:00 AM - Sym-Bionic Titan - 640,000 viewers
2:30 AM - Eureka Seven - 578,000 viewers
3:00 AM - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - 566,000 viewers
3:30 AM - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - 547,000 viewers
4:00 AM - Cowboy Bebop - 542,000 viewers
4:30 AM - Cowboy Bebop - 548,000 viewers
5:00 AM - InuYasha - 522,000 viewers
5:30 AM - InuYasha - 496,000 viewers

It seemed like a pretty decent week for the block. It's too bad that Samurai 7 lost so much after changing its timeslot, but it's understandable. GXP did get some boost from coming on after Bleach. Thundercats and Sym-Bionic Titan seemed to do pretty well. Eureka Seven didn't do that well, but it was moved to a later slot as well. Personally, I kind of wish that Samurai 7 kept its time slot since it was doing pretty well and I don't think that GXP really works as something to come on right after Bleach, but it might change timeslots again when they get another new show on the lineup.

Blargh! 12:30-2 performed waaaay lower than they should have. Samurai 7 was getting such good ratings these past few weeks but last saturday it did as bad as Casshern Sins.Tenchi Muyo! GXP definately killed the momentum of the block that night, although it's drop doesn't look too horrible at 200,000, but clearly it must have scared Samurai 7 viewers off and that hurt it and Thundercats potential performance. Everything else past 2AM is fine, though, although Inuyasha could've done a little better than it did. All in all, I'm just going to hope that next week that ratings for 12:30-2 AM improve a little bit, although the overall performance is still fairly good.

...Ugh, putting GXP next to Bleach was a pretty bad decision considering the audience that is sticking around. I wouldn't be surprised if the lineup switches around to the very point of having Eureka Seven back in the 1:00am area and GXP stuck with 2:30am.

I agree. Having GXP after Bleach really wasn't a good choice, although I think that GXP wasn't a good choice for a new show to begin with based on the first episode. Samurai 7 right after Bleach made a lot more sense given how it still offered some decent action to keep some of the viewers from Bleach a bit longer. Moving GXP at 2:30AM would also make a lot more sense than giving it such a good timeslot on the block.
