A couple of surprises this weekend it seems. First, that The Karate Kid was the number one movie. People thought there was a chance it would make number one, but that The A-Team held the advantage. Not so much it seems. No, the surprise was that not only did it make number one, but also too how much money it made. In it's debut weekend, The Karate Kid scored itself $56 million off of a $40 million budget. Along with it too, it grabbed modest reviews. Currently it's rated 70% at Rotten Tomatoes. Like the original Karate Kid from which this film was reimagined, it's probably more than likely that we'll get at least one sequel.

The other surprise of the weekend was how much The A-Team made and not the good kind. It seems that not only did The A-Team land in second place, but that it only managed $26 million off of a $110 million budget and pretty divided reviews. It's currently rated at 52% at RottenTomatoes. I don't know if there will be any sequels now in this potential franchise.

After three weekends at number one, Shrek Forever After dropped to third place with $15.8 million and a $210 million total. It becomes the fourth film of 2010 to reach $200 million.

In fourth place is Get Him to the Greek with $10.1 million and a $36.5 million total.

And rounding out the top 5 is Killers with $8.1 million and a $30.6 million total.

Out of the top 12 is only Date Night (13th).

Opening next weekend are two new movies. First up is the highly anticipated Toy Story 3 (rated G) in conventional theaters and IMAX 3-D. It stars the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, Wallace Shawn, John Ratzenberger, Estelle Harris, John Morris, Laurie Metcalf, R. Lee Ermey, Jodi Benson, Ned Beatty, Michael Keaton, Timothy Dalton, Jeff Garlin, Bonnie Hunt, Whoopi Goldberg, Kristen Schaal, and Blake Clark.

And the other new film of the weekend is Jonah Hex (rated PG-13). It stars Josh Brolin, John Malkovich, Megan Fox, Will Arnett, Michael Shannon, and Michael Fassbender.

Here are your numbers....

1) The Karate Kid- $56,000,000 ($56,000,000) NEW!
2) The A-Team- $26,000,000 ($26,000,000) NEW!
3) Shrek Forever After- $15,800,000 ($210,052,000)
4) Get Him to the Greek- $10,100,000 ($36,500,000)
5) Killers- $8,170,000 ($30,670,000)
6) Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time- $6,600,000 ($72,300,000)
7) Marmaduke- $6,000,000 ($22,278,000)
8) Sex and the City 2- $5,525,000 ($84,745,000)
9) Iron Man 2- $4,550,000 ($299,311,000)
10) Splice- $2,860,000 ($13,071,000)
11) Robin Hood- $2,700,000 ($99,600,000)
12) Letters to Juliet- $1,648,000 ($46,708,000)

Wow, the A-Team being a complete bomb is kind of unexpected. I guess the marketing must have really dropped the ball.

Ouch on the A team. I thought it would be a toss up between that and Karate Kid but I didn't think the numbers would be so drastically different.

The Karate Kid doing so well is more a surprise than The A-Team doing bad. I think they'll both have great word of mouth.

I saw Prince of Persia on Friday, and it should be doing way better than it is. While not the perfect movie, it beats the sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean in sheer entertainment value. Oh, well.

Who else thinks Jonah Hex is going to flop next week? The movie doesn't look interesting to me and most of the people I talk to thinks it looks stupid.

Also, next week is my most anticipated movie of the summer. To rephase what I said last week in a less dramatic way, Toy Story 3 will most likely break Shrek the Third's record of $120 million. I'm thinking around $135 million for TS3.

I'm pretty sure it's common knowledge that Jonah Hex is going to bomb hard. It most likely will open near the bottom of top ten or won't even break the top ten and then be quietly released on DVD and Blu Ray at the beginning of September.

Going up against TS3? Hard...

I think that both Prince of Persia and A-Team will do better on DVD, I had this talk with my brother and there just hasn't been that big of a Summer, there hasn't really been any must see movies other than Iron Man 2 and the upcoming Toy Story 3. Also I think that even though the economy is starting to improve in some areas, a lot less people are going to the theaters since it's still so expensive and the fact that movies come out of DVD quicker than they used to.

I'm SHOCKED at this news. I thought that the A-Team would have KILLED Karate Kid but the opposite happened. I wasn't impressed by KK's previews so I went to see the A-Team instead. I agree with Knightmare in that The A-Team and Prince Of Persia will do better on DVD than in the box office given that DVD's come out faster than they used to and the increased cost of movie tickets nowadays.

I think Toy Story 3 will be the only film this summer that will best Iron Man 2's numbers.

Any chance of Jonah Hex doing box damage was thrown away when they moved it up to the same day as TOY STORY 3. One of the most anticipated movies of the year. It was rather silly for them to move it. Especially when it wasn't even going up against anything originally. Hex will just be washed under the storm of that movie getting a sequel after so long, strange move. I'm sure the excuse is "it's aiming for a totally different audience"... I don't buy that.

Everyone and their mother is gonna go rush to see TS3. Besides people who've read the comics, nobody even knows who Jonah Hex is. Hell the GA had no idea it was even coming out until probably just two months because of no marketing. The only people who are gonna rush to see it are fans of the comics and horny fanboys who wanna drool over Megan Fox.

And I'm a bit saddened by A-Team's numbers. It was pretty good.

I too was surprised at A-Team's surprisingly low numbers. I'm also surprised that Karate Kid did so good, considering it has an odd audience to reach (not really for kids, yet not for the older crowd either.) I'm hoping A-Team manages to make up its budget somewhere (I'd love to see a sequel!)

As for predictions, I'm betting (as with everyone else) that TS3 will take first, and Jonah will end up bombing. But, does anybody else think that if/when it does bomb, that it could put a damper in future "obscure" DC heroes from getting movies?

I doubt WB cares really as they still have to put out movies with their A listers ( not named Batman ) out with successful movies.

When trying decide which movie to see, Karate Kid got drastically better reviews than A-Team and that was the deciding factor for me.

I'm sure it went that way with a lot of other people. Also toss in that the Karate Kid was PG and you've got parents taking their kids to see something they loved as children and it's no brainier that this movie out performed A-Team.

Yes parents may of loved it as well as kids but you feel better as a parent taking your kids to see Karate Kid vs A-Team.

There were quite a number of kids in the audience when I saw The A-Team. Obviously The Karate Kid is a kid-marketed movie, but that's not to say that The A-Team is non-family friendly. It's pretty much a live-action cartoon, just like the original series.

I'm surprised by its performance. I thought for sure that after hearing so many complaints about previous TV adaptations being turned into comedies or just jokes about the original source that people might be interested in seeing one that actually stayed true to the show it was based on. Personally, I thought it was the first good TV-to-movie transition since The Fugitive.

Thats not what Mr. T said. I think fans of the original took this to heart. I know I did and it ultimately was a factor in my decision.

Mr. T didn't actually say that, it was just fake gossip that some media picked up. You got trolled.

I guess Karate Kid was more aimed at the teen/tween audience so that's probably why it did so well. But Yoy Story id going to rule the box office next week, I plan on seeing it myself.

So...kids went to see The Karate Kid, which has a length of more than 2 hours. I guess kids can last for a while through films now.

Toy Story 3 will make over $150 million.

Thing is, my predictions are always wrong, so...I REALLY hope I don't jinx it.

Whatever Toy Story 3 makes will be interesting. Toy Story 2's opening weekend would equal over $85 million today, and that was on a 5-day weekend.

I'm guessing it will make around $145 million or so this weekend.

Really ? How do I know your not trolling now, and why didn't Mr. T make a cameo ? We all know he wasn't too busy and we all know he was the most popular character so he didn't get written out... so explain that please.

Watched the live-action "Moana" today and felt nothing that special compared to the original 2016 film. In fact, I don't remember much from the first animated film, but I think they barely changed anything in the 2026 version
@Sam the Cartoonist is right, I've registered on this site two times and I've enjoyed it! :) I'd posted this back in 2016, over ten years ago!
