I think they'll be double, maybe even triple the regular Adult Swim Action ratings.

Those particular shows that they aired last night, it might not cost a TON to license, but it would cost a fair chunk.

The stuff we saw last night were all old shows that are pretty cheap TODAY.

But the problem is, Toonami *CAN NOT* live on old shows and if they are paying good dollars they can't afford to air them once (or twice) a week in slots that most people consider graveyard spots.

Any relaunch of Toonami is going to have to come to the plate with something new. Simply adding Toonami bumpers into Adult Swim anime certainly isn't going to reinvigorate the base for long.

Unfortunately it's about the revenue these days, and if they ain't making no money on bringing it back, it won't happen. They know the ratings they get with the Fox reruns and some live action shows, and we can't say we'd suddenly get bored of watching classic anime every Sat. night again. It would be kind of a risk. Back when they started they were kind of the upstart, but now they have to deal with corporate.

In the business world, if you risk and fail, you get fired.

April Fools was a good time to try such a one day shot. Even if people went "No, you're pulling my foot, its April Fools!", all the people who didn't believe enough to go watch will find out Monday the joke was on them and REALLY want to see it again.

The thing I find funny is --- as many times as TZ has used Toonami coming back as a joke, if this isn't a yearly-ish thing, next year when this happens, NO ONE will really know until they look.

This adds such a weird, weird, weird spin on this joke.

Hmm... Outlaw Star's one of Amazon's top 10 best selling anime DVDs at the moment, with Trigun in the top 15. Blue Sub 6, 2 Gundam Wing sets, and 3 Yuyu Hakusho sets are in the top 50. Don't know how much sales for most of those shows matter given Bandai's not really doing anything, but it shows this night was some sort of success in addition to all the Twitter and Facebook talk.

So, if Toonami was to come back on Adult Swim, what would you want it to look like? I'd say make it take up the full night. Include some retro stuff, some new stuff, some Adult Swim stuff that would by no means be appropriate for Toonami contentwise in the past to justify the block being on Adult Swim and not regular CN. Don't make it just anime either; American action shows and action-comedies should be welcome as well. Maybe Dragonball Z, either One Piece or Shippuden (whichever's easier to acquire), MEGAS XLR or Sym-Bionic Titan, The Venture Brothers, Black Dynamite, Aqua Teen Hungerforce (for the lulz and the fact it was originally supposed to be a Toonami original series), Bleach, a new anime (Tiger and Bunny?), a Gundam, Outlaw Star, FMA, Durarara, Big O, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Yuyu Hakusho, Inu-Yasha, Astro Boy, and Thundercats would make a good line-up (perhaps some of the later series could be rotated to make room for some encores). Oh, and if they could do an encore of DC Nation right before the block at 8, that would be even more perfect.

This. Thank you so much for keeping it real. Fantasy schedulers need to keep the present, and the fact that AS is ratings and money-starved in mind. Nick can manage with "The '90's Are All That" because they OWN that programming. Same with Cartoon Planet '12. Not at all with a revived Toonami on Adult Swim.

Also, shame on those who want friggin' DBZ to come back. Does anyone REALLY want to stomach weekly episodes of that slow as molasses show again? Next to Inuyasha, its the most re-ran anime in CN's history. Go get the DVD sets, geez.

What we're all going to need to remember is the jump in DVD sales happened in part because this is perceived to be a one time thing and raised some major nostalgia levels.

Would Toonami elicit DVD sales if it was a regular thing? Probably not.

The thing is, Toonami can do what it did well in the past --- act as a great promo block media people tuning in are actually interested in. Games, Movies, Anime, Action, etc.

I'm not sure if I asked it here or in the other thread, but the interesting point I spun here is: Could Steve Blum end up being a Bill Maze for the entertainment industry? I wonder.

I think if Toonami is to be successful they will want to take a different spin on how they sell products.

As far as what shows can we expect? I think we could reasonable believe they could get shows that WERE on Toonami pretty cheap, but that won't keep the block afloat ---- nor could they program 12-half hour blocks (6 hours) of programming with all original programming.

The truth of the matter is, Adult Swim Action has some great shows on right now, but not enough people are watching them and unless there is a change, I really don't expect that to change.

Bottom line is, if they want to really make a block like this successful, there's certainly going to have to be some interesting decisions to make.

Y'know i kinda have to wonder why they don't just turn saturday night into toonami.
Afterall, Saturday night adult swim is when they air all of their anime, and is meant to appeal to adults. What did almost every adult anime fan watch when they were kids? Toonami! By its nostalgic value, it appeals to the target audience for adult swim. There are thousands of popel who would love to see toonami return; i doubt anyone loves saturday night adult swim enough to hate the change; and they would not have to change the actual line up of the shows, only how they are promoted... in the end, i see very little risk involved in making saturday night into toonami night

Keeping the same programming of ASA now, but with a Toonami wraparound... I don't understand why some people don't think this would work. If anything, it would add an extra sense of excitement to the Saturday night lineup, and only do it a world of good. Why wouldn't Bleach and Durarara and whatever else work on Toonami? Where is it etched in stone that this block has to be nostalgia, and nothing more?

I know the nostalgia factor was a large facet of its popularity last night for many people (including myself), but this was a block built on showcasing new and innovative programming, and there's no reason why it can't do that again in place of ASA. Toonami doesn't need DBZ to be Toonami. As much as I loved seeing it on again, with Bruce Faulconer closing credits and all, it's a dish best served for a special occasion (IE AFD). The shows they got now would be fine, and any other new acquisitions they make down the road would surely be more than enough to keep it afloat. I mean, it can't be that expensive to bring Steve in, record a few lines, make some new HD bumps, and call it a day.

I'd love it to be a nostalgia block, but if it can't be that way, I'd be perfectly fine with supporting it as ASA with a Toonami wraparound. I mean, I already watch ASA most of the time as it is, so why not watch it as Toonami instead?

They aren't paying good dollars or probably any dollars for most of that content. Bandai Japan paying CN to run the original Mobile Suit Gundam started that trend. They've paid to keep certain series, but by and large, they have apparently tried to avoid paying for the rights for anime, and often demand a cut of the merch or other payment.
