"Dragon Ball Z Kai" Episodes 1-8 Talkback (Spoilers)

Man, it's cool to see DBZ on TV again, even if it's shortened and all weird. Nothing really to complain about, other than Roshi's Frothy Mug of Milk, but on the whole, no edits I noticed and it feels rather solid. Good to see a dub that's consistent from the start, instead of being edited and de-edited and dubbed and re-dubbed over a decade or so.

And I've also never really seen the early episodes of DBZ (unless you count DBZ Abridged, of course), so, 'twas a good watch.

I'm loving Vic's version of Dragon Soul! I'm also surprised they kept the shot-gun. In fact, I must say i'm pleased with the new dub. I'll have to get used to Bulma's new voice, but that's about it. I've gotten used to Gohan's awesome new voice in a flash. I did experiences a few glitches, though.

Well that was delightfully nostalgic in a lot of ways watching DBZ around 5PM my time.

Of violence shown nearly all the blood was cleaned up or altered in some manner and Roshi's frothy white remains riduculous looking. Dialogue wise though I was surprised. Most of it wasn't really dodging the serious business. Kind of reminds me of the TV dub of Yu Yu Hakusho. Especially when Raditz talked. :anime:

Liked Sean's Dragon Soul a lot more. Vic's was all over the place vocally and I didn't like the way Vic seemed to try to make it all hardcore. Though I would like to see him have a shot at a full version.

I also had tons of glitching while watching. I'm assuming there was a higher amount of viewers than a channel like Nicktoons could handle as it was working fine earlier today. I'm hoping they move this to Nickelodeon if it gets enough views.

I'm reliving my childhood watching these es again. I wonder how soon it will be before they put the movies up.

That was surreal, seeing this on Nicktoons and not CN. Still, Nick has treated it pretty well so far.

Vic singing the opening instead of Sean was unexpected, but I feel both versions are equally good. Really impressed by the dubbing. I can tell those involved are actually trying now. The writing's much better too and it actually now matches what was being said in the Japanese version.

The music's going to get some getting used to, since I'm so used to Shunsuke Kikuchi's score from the DBZ version of these episodes.

EDIT: Did anyone else notice that the sign during Tenkai-Ichi Budokai tournament in the flashbacks was actually replaced with English text?
Just had to point this out, because that sign appeared all over the place in untranslated Japanese kanji characters when Dragon Ball/Z aired on Toonami back in the day and it looks really strange that it's only now been altered.

I had the episodes taped and ocean studios does appear in the credits under Video Editing and Production.

Dialogue wise though I was surprised. Most of it wasn't really dodging the serious business. Kind of reminds me of the TV dub of Yu Yu Hakusho. Especially when Raditz talked. :anime:
Yeah, he even told Goku to stack the bodies on the beach! O_O

*EDIT* Yeah, aside from Bardock's scar accidentally being erased, the edited version is alright so far.

I managed to catch a live feed of the episodes tonight

First a little story: Back in the day I wasnt really a DBZ fan. I watched it sometimes and enjoyed the characters but *hated* the pace at which things happened, this was around the Freeza arc. I liked the characters but ultimately found the show a chore to follow

Then Dragonball showed up, and I watched pretty much all the first season and a majority of the second as it aired. I loved the characters, the story and the comedy + pace. Back then I wondered at how much I enjoyed DB yet struggled with DBZ so much and wished it was shorter without constant battles getting in the way for episodes at a time.

DB: Kai answers this question and if these first 2 eps are anything to go by it did it very well. The acting sounds very convincing (though may I note Goku didnt sound too distraught in the second preview? It seemed kinda weird) and it flows together really well, I was surprised 2 episodes had passed by the end of it. I dont know if thats because I'm used to more waffle in a DBZ ep or not...

But in any case I'm very impressed and look forward to seeing more!

So does this means Ocean is editing this series? It doesn't matter to me much since they can't touch the audio which is what they always messed up to the fullest.

Loved the dub so far. I almost felt like I was back in 1995 for a minute there. One thing I have to say I will have to get use to is DBK score. It just doesn't feel all that Dragon Ball to me. It doesn't anything like DB's or DBZ's scores.

I have nothing to say about the new opening but its good but I like Sean's better. Glad they kept the previews, though.

Both episodes are now uploaded on Nicktoons website.

Ending was shortened, as well but they kept Jerry Jewell's version.

Since these two episodes are now uploaded, I'll start listing edits.

I find it weird that they had to shorten the ending, when it was already around a minute long. I'm guessing they probably had to shorten it to fit the preview, though.

But yeah, just checked out episode 1, and I'm liking it so far. The acting is definitely better, and everything else is pretty good. Surprised they had Vic sing "Dragon Soul" for the TV dub, and I kinda wish he'd get a shot at a full (or at least full TV-size) version, but both his and Sean's versions are good (I was just growing to Sean's, though, lol). I guess if I can't get the "powers that be" at home to try getting Nicktoons so I can catch these on the air, I'll just keep tabs on the TV version online until I buy the DVD.

Just finished watching the first episode on Nicktoons Video, and it was pretty good job all around, awkward editing aside (the milk and the farmer's cigarette,), the story felt fresh and new, and I love it. The voice direction feels different from previous Dragon Ball Z interpretations and it actually felt like I was watching Dragon Ball manga come to life, especially with the speed of Kai.

Going to invest into the DVD in the near future.

Kinda like Vic's versions more. They just sound smoother or I'm just used to his singing at this point.

Okay, to start things off I just want to say that I loved the opening theme song to Kai, it had a nice beat to it and the lyrics were kind of cool, I didn't quite know what to expect and it really got me pumped to watch the episode. With that aside, the origin of Goku was very "Superman" feeling but with a hint of originality, but it still kind of reeked of "Superman" to me. I loved the little recap they did of the original Dragon Ball and the Goku versus Piccolo (sp?) fight, I kind of want to read the original Dragon Ball manga to get a better feel of what brought us to this point, maybe I will find time this summer at some point.

The animation mixed with the sound effects and the music feels a little primitive, but that should come to be expected from an anime that is 20 years old I suppose, I did really enjoy the voice overs though and felt they were done well. The story was kind of cool but like I said before, the origin was kind of "eh", but I really loved the epic arrival of Raditz and his awesome confrontations with both Piccolo and Goku, I think I'm going to end up loving this character so I hope he does not die a horrible fate soon (I'd be disappointed).

Fun first episode, thanks Nicktoons for picking this up!

Okay, so now it's on to episode 2 of DBZkai, I enjoyed the first episode immensly so I'm hoping that the second episode will give me the same feeling. So we get the big reveal that Raditz is Goku's brother and they give us a short backstory of Goku hitting his head and becoming less violent and more like a normal boy, nothing special here, but the explination of who Goku is and what he was born into was pretty cool.

Wow, what a jerk! Raditz goes ahead and lays down a threat to take Gohan with him against the will of Goku to show Goku that he must obey him and join him in gathering the Saiyans....then he actually takes him! Jeez, talk about getting the job done! Then on top of it all he orders Goku to kill 100 humans by the time he returns tomorrow or he all but seals the fate of his son, this is getting intense by the second, especially now that Piccolo arrived and offers to team up with Goku to face Raditz in a little tag-team action. Holy cow this is getting good, nice little threat there by Piccolo but it's waived off by Goku (too easily) in favor of working as a unit for the greater good, hopefully they can work on getting Gohan back soon.

Can't wait for episode 3, it looks like we are going to get a big time fight between Raditz and Goku/Piccolo with the fate of Goku's son at hand, man this series is off to a good start!

I thought Vic's Dragon Soul was great, until it hit the halfway point. His voice kept cracking, and that rasp seems a bit forced. But, I did like the energy he had. It didn't quite make up for everything else though. I like Sean's better.

Since I don't have Nicktoons I'm watching it on their official site. Hmmm... I like the voice changes to Bulma and Gohan, Justin Cook's acting for Raditz improved when compared to DBZ.

I was also experiencing some glitches while watching it on Nicktoons site.
I didn't know that Goku's voice actor was suppose to sing the opening:sweat:
I wonder why they replaced him with Vic. Anybody have a link to the opening song done by Sean?
