International Disney Networks Thread Part 15

Like I said, ours was 24/7 from the start in 2012

Over here it closed at 12AM, came back at 6AM

24-hour kids channels were a blessing and a curse

In the case of the Disney channels, it often meant more surplus EU content overnight and that was boring to me

It's useless to have a 24-hour channel if they air useless content at night. (like with Gumball on CN CEE, not saying about Disney ones)

Not really useless. There's content for night owls even if there's only a few shows. I can understand why Disney Jr wasn't airing overnights in many places. The target demo wasn't watching. Although I will never understand why Disney XD wasn't 24/7 in here.

Because obviously there will always be some people watching the channel even if there's just 10k people watching. Just assuming the number. Still a solid amount are watching especially on weekends.

I was asked why British kids' channels were so late to 24-hour broadcasting - I think it was just cheaper to not run overnight for very low ratings, while the continent lives later into the evening, and then the US, Canada, Asia, and Latin America were serving bigger populations where it simply was more feasible.

Disney XD was a similar case

Yeah, meanwhile we were a small country and only Canal Panda and later Panda Kids closed at night, while CN handed over to TCM

It has to do with national trends, indeed.
Nothing to do with the much bigger populations of other areas, as clearly Italy and Spain are not more populous than UK+ Ireland combined , and still had 24/7 channels.

At least since 1999-2000 for DC IT.

@JulianRO Keep in mind that channels are not 24/7 because one is supposed to watch them all the time

That's obvious.

When there is just one show running, or two, maximum 3, it feels useless. But overall, if there's a varied schedule at night, I wouldn't complain, even I would stay up at night to watch, especially if there were some Fox Kids shows airing, like how it happened with the Dutch feed of DC.

Fox Kids UK was the same Diabolik/Ulysses 31 overnight lineup until it became Jetix

On that note, they were NOT trying to deter kids from staying up late. TV channels do not act in loco parentis (lol…)

The European quota stuff airing late at night was simply to highlight more Disney stuff in the daytimes.

That said, the bedtime songs on Disney Junior are a routine thing only because this is genuinely proven to impact kids (for example, CBeebies has been airing In the Night Garden at the same time ever since it premiered as when they briefly moved it, it messed up kids' routines). That is the only exception.

I honestly think that at night, the best combination would be a mix of both old and new series. Or even better, only old series, if possible.

Yeah, back in the early 2010s I wished that overnights would become a dumping ground for old shows, but at the time I wasn't aware of the EU regulations

I thought DC Portugal preferred to air old shows in the afternoon?
A lot of feeds liked showing them during school hours.

Some of them. When Disney Cinemagic closed they only aired a narrow selection on both channels. Disney Channel got Timon and Pumbaa and Quack Pack during the daytime. Disney Junior only got The Little Mermaid after the 9pm watershed. All of this in 2013-2014.

A sampler of continuity junctions from Toon Disney France, recorded several months before the rebrand to Cinemagic in 2007.
