Studio Trigger's "Kill la Kill" Talkback (Spoilers)

Episode #22

Damn you Imaishi for depriving us of hearing Ryuuko say 'nee-san'!

The return of the Fight Club President! Perhaps it would have been prudent to bring her back a half-dozen episodes ago? :p

Satsuki continues to be a great main character. It only took her one time to learn a single lesson. Ryuuko learned the same lesson over a half dozen times. ~_~

Re: Episode #22

Ah, good stuff. Seeing Nui finally on the losing end is so nice after all this time, and all the interactions between the now almost all-encompassing group of protagonists, especially as they realize just how huge Ragyo's plans are, sets up for their final battles very well.

But those final moments, as obvious as they all were, played out so perfectly. The sisters are together, accepting each other as such despite their past together, both in full control of their original Kamui and with the blood of the other flowing through them. They transform in parallel and even use the same abilities, heading off to the final battle with their horrible mother who only they can take down. And the rest of the crew is backing up the Dai-Gurren against their own enemies well, with Mako returning to her most battle-ready form to show off herself. These last few should be really great.

Episode #22

The events in this episode essentially set things up for the climax of the series as the final battle against COVERS commences.

Some highlights:

- Ryuko and Senketsu are reunited. Nui Harime possessed both halves of the Scissor Blade ... for a short while, as Ryuko overpowers Nui enough to regain the two blades. And then, she chops off both of Nui's arms, in which she then goes into a fit of rage.
- Hououmaru rescues Nui as the ship gets invaded by the Life Fibers, giving Nudist Beach a chance to extract everyone, including some old foes from earlier in the series.
- During a brief confrontation, Satsuki asks Ryuko to fight alongside her in their battle against Ragyo. She explains her reasons for being so hard on Ryuko ever since she had first enrolled at Honnouji Academy. It was for a good reason: to train her (like I said a few episodes back, it's like Master Asia training Domon Kasshu) - no matter how futile her methods may have been.
- Junketsu is injected with both Ryuko and Satsuki's blood as well as Senketsu's own life fibers in preparation for the final battle. Afterwards, Iori proceeds to manufacture new Goku Uniforms using the Life Fibers they collected, and he does so donning his own Three Star uniform - Tailor's Regalia.
- Satsuki goes over with everyone Ragyo's true plot - to turn everyone and everything in this world into Life Fibers using satellites to do so in a swift fashion, all while blowing up the Earth in the process.
- Both Ryuko and Satsuki, in their kamuis, set off to go after Ragyo as Nudist Beach's forces battle against an all out assault by COVERS. Of course, Ryuko had a hard time calling Satsuki "sister" in that one part before they transformed and departed for Honnouji Academy.
As for the final scene in the episode:

Mako's Two-Star Fight Club uniform returns. But that's not the only uniform that we'll likely be seeing again. The Four Devas will have theirs back as well.
The final two episodes should be epic, and we still have an OVA episode coming in the future, so we definitely can't wait to see what happens next.

And now, all together everyone. Do the Mako!

[xspoiler=Not sure if it's safe, considering a certain character in the series]

You're probably joking about it, but they explained in in-episode by saying they have an excess of life fibers after that battle, so they could make Goku uniforms again with those.

Fav moment: Satsuki learning her lesson that her approach to what she tried to do was wrong, and she apologized.
And then seeing everyone eating Mako's mom's cooking was the icing to the cake!

yeah, it was nice to see both groups bonding before the finale

After final scene & preview for 22, we know that they're definitely going pull out everything they have for the finale. It's gonna be nuts, and I can't wait to see it in action. My only curiosity at this point will be whether KLK will have rewatch value. Twists and unexpected results have been the thrust of the show, and I have to wonder how that will play out long term.

well, the over-the-top action scenes are fun as hell on their own

Episode #23

The original Life-Fiber falls! The final battle is set!! Mako battles in her school delinquent get-up!!! A ship turns into a weapon!!!! Guts farts!!!!! Trigger is so behind schedule they don't have any animation for the next episode preview!!!!!!

Exclamation marks!!!!!!!

Episode #23

An epic episode with some epic moments, but this was the biggest one of all (as predicted on Pixiv two weeks ago):

COVERS HAS FALLEN!!
[/xspoiler]
Jacob already summed this episode up well, but I'll add some other observations:

- As expected, the Four Devas received new Goku Uniforms (in black and gold), and unleashed their final forms in hybrid Nudist fashion. Most of all, as they take on Ragyo and the Original Life Fiber, Sanageyama reveals that his eyelids are no longer sewn shut when his "Ninja Turtle-style" mask comes off (and would explain why the scars were no longer visible).
- Both Bakuzan and the Scissor Blades were forged from hardened Life Fibers, as Ragyo revealed when she pulled out her Needle Blades during her battle with Ryuko and Satsuki.
- Ryuko creates a diversion in one scene where it looked like she had been severed in half by Ragyo. Satsuki plays the decoy as a regenerated Ryuko rips right through the Original Life Fiber.
- Shinra-Koketsu, the Ultimate Kamui, is unveiled at last. After the fall of COVERS, Ragyo restores Nui's arms  as she prepares to don her final creation, which takes the form of what looks to be a hybrid traditional Japanese wedding dress and a Miko uniform.

Next week is the big finale, and hopefully Studio Trigger will not disappoint.

I do have a suspicion that we might not have seen the last of the original life-fiber tho

Heh, you're not the only one wondering such things. It's definitely a fun watch, but I don't know if I'm willing to take the ride again, especially since I've mostly be tolerating the fanservice where in most cases I would have dropped similar shows long ago.

Anyways, looking forward to the finale. Surely expecting an epic battle.

Re: Episode #23

Okay, now this is what I expect from a late-series episode from the creators of Gurren Lagann.

Seriously, battles so epic that they become more nonsensical than ever, every character working together and coming up with new powers that are beyond anything we've seen before, and all the former enemies being brought back to join in, along with those signature titles tagging along each of them. Oh, and that "kyuu" pun was brilliant. And perhaps most importantly to really achieving that Gurren Lagann feel, the particularly climactic moments are perfectly accompanied by a new insert song by Eir Aoi and loaded with passionate monologues that would be enough on their own.

And that ending card as they face down the ultimate weapon. Oh yes, this is exactly the kind of stuff I was hoping for.

Episode #24

"Kouhai noticed me!" Well, sort of. Gamagoori's revival was hilarious, Inada Tetsu has outdone himself with this role. To take the king of dignified characters and make him a giant with a love for his underclassman and bondage and submission was a genius ploy. I hope his is a story that will continue until completion someday.

Satsuki cut here hair, no~!! Short hair looks terrible on the Kiryuin girls. :(

Obviously there is still a sequel hook, but I don't think Imaishi Hiroyuki could pull it off. He and Nakashima Kazuki had a hard enough time writing a somewhat decent plot for twenty-four episodes. Lest a sequel went full-on ahead with putting Ryuuko and the others in new positions I don't think there's much left to say.

Farewell, Senketsu. *Cue Sasaki Isao singing something bittersweet*

Hmm, some kneejerk reactions to Kill la Kill 24. Compare this ending & a lot of this final battle dialogue to the final arc of Gurren Lagann and you'll see a LOT in common. Freedom and autonomy vs the suppression the villains want to impose, fighting spirit and determination vs a lot of assertions about the law of the universe and our supposed destiny to submit. Mako's "let's go on a date!" please-come-back speech is both funny and an acknowledgment of a lot of the subtext people were saying was there pretty early on, I think. Satsuki: get up there and save the human race! Mako: after this we'll live as we please! PROTECT GIRL'S FASHION! In fact, that's probably why Mako is entertaining and a brilliant idea for a character: she communicates in the most ridiculous ways possible but is also the one to say what's most important. Satsuki gets in on some of that too, but whenever Mako has a "halleujah!" scene she's either saying something Ryuko needs to hear or getting at a message or some of both. Best comic relief in recent memory, anybody?

Episode #24 FINAL

Trigger delivered and did not disappoint in the series finale of Kill la Kill. If you haven't watched it yet, go do so now!

Highlights:
- Shinra-Koketsu's true power is unleashed - Ultimate Submission, as Ragyo neutralizes the power of the Goku Uniforms as well as both Senketsu and Junketsu. She proves to be virtually invincible to all attacks, even breaking Bakuzan to pieces.
- Ryuko - sans Senketsu - takes on Ragyo head on; however, her attacks have no effect. Thanks to some kind words from Satsuki, Senketsu pierces through Ragyo, removing Hououmaru in the process and restoring everyones powers.
- Gamagoori takes one for the team, literally, in order to protect Mako one last time. He "dies" soon after, only to reappear in epic fashion thanks to some special armor he had made beforehand. He tears right through the Life Fiber shield protecting the transmitter (with a nice Gurren Lagaan nod by the animators), allowing both Aikirou and Tsumugi to destroy the whole thing with their DTRs.
- Ragyo is sliced to pieces with a joint Scissor Blade attack by Ryuko and Satsuki; however, she has one last trick up her sleeve, as she has Nui absorb herself into her.
- With Ragyo restored, she launches herself into outer space and completes the Cocoon Sphere. Ryuko decides to go after her, absorbing everyone's Goku Uniforms as well as Junketsu to create Senketsu's final form: Senketsu-Kisaragi (and in epic Domon Kasshu fashion I might add). Also, Ryuko promised she would go on a date with Mako when she came back.
- Ryuko takes on Ragyo as the two fight it out in space. The action was just too intense to describe in words, but Ryuko manages to defeat Ragyo by absorbing Shinra-Koketsu's own power. She finishes by telling all of the Life Fibers via satellite to return the humans back to being human.
- With the threat over, Ryuko wants Ragyo to return with her back to Earth. She refuses, and takes her own life instead, but not before telling Ryuko that the threat of Life Fibers is not over, and that they will make a return one day.
- Farewell, Senketsu: Ryuko is plunged back to Earth, and during the dissent, Senketsu disintegrates, but not without thanking her for everything. Its purpose is now complete.
- Ryuko's fall from space is broken by Satsuki, and Mako, and the Four Devas, and well ..... everybody at the academy. Satsuki welcomes Ryuko back, in which she responds back with "Nee-san".
Epilougue:
- Honnouji Academy is no more. The remains of the experimental city now sits at the bottom of the sea.
- Ryuko and Mako have their date, with Satsuki - now with short hair - tagging along with them. There's even a scene in the credits where it looked like Gamagoori was about to ask Mako (or Satsuki) to go on a date with him.
- In the final scene, Ryuko sees something that resembles Senketsu, and smiles before walking off to catch up with Mako and Satsuki
And that's the end. A bittersweet way to end a great series, even though there is an OVA episode coming soon.

I'll have some final thoughts about Kill la Kill later on.

Re: Episode #24 FINAL

Wow, that was one hell of a finale. I'm sorry for any doubts I had, Trigger. Granted, I still have my complaints about the series, and it sure as hell wasn't another Gurren Lagann, but it definitely proves that this team knows how to make this kind of an epic finale more than once. It's incredibly similar to the point of being predictable, but I don't mind that in the least, and I loved every second. I hope they all get together for something else and manage to spin it in a new way while still keeping it this exciting.
